As far as concealers go just wear an oversized cotton brief or boxer it does the same thing and looks like under pants because it is. And for plastic pants, esp in summer, use snap-on plastic pants - the air flow helps with the heat and still protects the seat area which is most vulnerable to leaks. Papa

I talked to JoeK about wearing plastic pants with disposables. The general consensus was that they do not work. The plastic pants provide a false sense of security. I tried wearing a pair of plastic pants from xpmedical with my abena extra's. I found that when I sit down and urinate, the diaper is more prone to leakage after a couple wettings drastically reducing the capacity of the diaper. So I wore plastic pants over them thinking this would save me. NOT! It did nothing for me. The diaper leaked and the urine came out of the plastic pants onto my clothes and furniture. It leaked out the wing of the diaper where the tapes are. So I came to the conclusion, that in cases where the wearer is in a seated position, the diaper is more prone to leakage and plastic pants will not help.

Plastic pants just serve to trap leaked fluid between the outer shell of the diaper and your clothing... they don't absorb anything so it just sits there until it finds a way out. Once fluid is outside of a disposable it isn't exactly going to be reabsorbed.

If you want protection from leakage you should look for plastic pants with a cloth lining on the inside. Several companies make them.

The key is "absorbance". How much do you think plastic pants will absorb? Notthing unless your wear lined plastic pants and even then,....they don't absorb much. Wearing plastic pants over a disposable diapers does do a couple of things that does help,......First, it does prevent (within reason) a sagging diaper. if there is any one thing that stand out over and above any reason for wearing plastic pants with a disposable diaper the prevention of a sagging diaper is the best reason. Another reason reason is odor control. Plastic pants do offer a small degree of odor protection....it will NOT mask, or prevent 100% of odor control, but I've found wearing plastic pants does help. The last thing is small leakage. What I'm talking about is those very small leaks, or spots all of us experience one time or another, on one, or both of your butt cheeks. I am talking about a very, very small diaper leakage that leaks out around the thigh area of your cheeks. If your diaper is pretty wet and you go to sit down,..... this is when the liquid is squeezed out of the diaper with pressure that your applying as you sit. I NEVER plan on plastic pants to absorb anything because I know they won't.....thay is not the purpose, or intent of wearing plastic pants. Holding the diaper securley in place is by far the best reason to wear plastic pants with a dispoable diaper......if it offers anything else consider it as a bonus but don't count on it.

My experience wearing plastic pants with disposable is snug fitting pair of plastic pants for all the reasons mentioned in the above, but I like as little bulk as possible and a snug fitting pair of plastic pants offers what I will call compression. I wear Abena disposables and even their XPLus M4 has so little bulk it really is not noticeable in my opinion but I've noticed a little less bulk ( at least I think there is a little less) becuse the plastic pants that I wear compress the diaper some and I still feel very comfortable wearing the diaper and plastic pants. If you want to try this combination (tighter fitting) plastic pants, I would recommend trying the KINS (Babykins) Lowrider style plastic pants they sell. There is no fluff in these pants, and don't let the name "Lowrider" fool you. These pants are NOT a lowrider style garment as the name might lead you to believe. I buy the vanilla translucent color, but they do sell these pants in several differnt colors for those of you that want a little spice in your life.

In sum, if you want an absorbent plastic pant, then you need to buy thsoes pants that have some type of lining. The heavier the lining, the more absorbent the pant. No lining means NO absorbance so don't expect the pant to do some it was not designed to do. However, there is one style of plastic pant that is very absorbent........and that would be the All-In-One (AIO). With the AIO, you have a plastic pant with plenty of absorbence. In my opinion, the best AIO on the market is made by KINS. I used their AIO for night use for a long time but stop wearing them when I became bowel incon. AIO's and bowel incon is not a good combination. Hope this helps. :) :) :) :)

Well said, Johnstone!

You've covered some very good reasons to wear plastic pants over a disposable diaper and made it clear they cannot do much for leaks!

I would like to add that lined plastic pants are a hassle to launder and the plastic will age and be ready to toss out long before the cloth portion of the pants is ready to toss. For my money I'll buy cloth (terry or flannel) pants and pull them over a disposable and pull plastic pants over them. There is considerable choice in thin to thick "diaper pants". And for very minor leak spots, just as you mentioned, you can probably get by with wearing boxer briefs underwear over the disposable diaper with the legs scrunched up and pull on the plastic pants. Now you've added very little bulk but some great minor leak prevention.

I would also suggest an other good reason to wear plastic pants is to guard against the rare case of a major diaper malfunction. I'm sure everyone has read about the case of a diaper splitting open and dumping the wet gel and fluff in your pants.....not a good thought! Or tapes popping......leaving the disposable sliding down your pants leg as you try to get someplace to change the darn thing! In these instances, tho they may be rare, the plastic pants are worth their weight in gold!

My two cents says the plastic pants and a disposible diaper don't work good for stopping leaks. However they maybe of some help for a small leak if your not sitting down  I wear lots of crinkly plastic diapers this time of year. Because of the noise factor I wear plastic pants over them to stop the noise. Jane also does the same thing. But Jane found some really heavy cotton brief style panties that completely cover the diaper even in the crotch area. So she has been wearing them with plastic pants over them. She seems to think it works fairly well in controlling minor leaks Other then the leak she had last Sunday where she had one of those 1/2 moon leaks (as I call them) on her lower right butt cheek  If she'd had black shorts on it may not had showed. But with light blue it was a died give away  Berry was the one that spotted it first. I don't think anyone else saw it :? Of course we had to be at a park doing a cook out with a bunch of family and friends  . But the good part was I had my portable changing room. (the Van) Jane and I always have a extra pair of shorts or pants on hand  and the van is always stocked with diapers

Anyway I'm being paged got to go......................Sandy :)

I'm with Sandy. I think the only way they help is if your standing and you have a pin hole leak somewhere. I don't think they help if your sitting. I know they don't. Ive tried it sitting down, it doesn't work. They leak right around the plastic pants and all over my clothes.

In agreement here too, a pair of cloth underwear overtop to get any rogue leaks seems to work best for me too, can have some serious wet underwear if you flood, but nothing gets past the coverpant... funny what we can learn with trial & error... but the errors SUCK! ;-) Puffy

It all sucks Puffy! I find the trouble with disposables is that if they have the "cloth like breathable" outer then anything that lets air through will let moisture through. The "Stay dry liner" also keeps you from knowing how wet you really are till it is too late. Plastic pants will do little to stop the leaks - unless as it was said you are wearing cotton pants of some kind over the disposable. A lot of layers. With cloth diapers you know how wet you are and can head for change (usually) before a leak. I find with either cloth diapers or disposable diapers it always (mostly) pushing the limit that causes problems. But in that respect we all know that at times there just is not a convenient handy place to change our diapers ! Makes me want to stay home. We try this and we try that but all the" best laid plans of mice and men often go asunder" Papa
