Most of the time, when I go into a public bathroom to change, I just untape my diaper, change into a fresh one, and leave. I usually don't care who's in there or who hears me. When I first became incontinent, I would hide. I would go quietly and hopefully unnoticed into the stall to change and I would wait for the bathroom to clear. When nobody was left in there, I would then take care of business. But I was so embarassed. Now, I really don't care. I think I have moved past the point to where I'm just like so what. I have to wear diapers. I'm beginning to feel like many of you have said already...that diapers are no different than a pair of glasses, or a crutch, or a wheelchair. It's something that I need because of health problems.

Now I run the risk of ignorant people making fun of me. This is something I do fear. But I don't worry about it too much. In public, I don't know anybody. So who cares if someone does find out? Does anybody else feel this way?

I agree. Embarrassment about incontinence diminishes with experience doing the various things that we need to do to manage our condition. I no longer worry about changing in a public washroom, and I certainly don't worry about whether people might notice that I'm wearing a diaper when I'm going about my ordinary activities away from home.

All the time Don, all the time... I don't need someone elses opinion on how I should deal with a rather difficult problem to begin with. I used to hide or go in late at night when I bought my supplies, and when I had to change when I was out, although that is not very often, now I couldn't be bothered to hide any more, it is what it is to me. I use a handicap washroom if possible, more room, and more privacy, but if it is not available, I deal with it. The general public on the other side of the fence that can "hold it" have absolutely NO idea how hard it is to manage day to day. If they had to all of a sudden, their opinion or view would certainly be different! Don't worry about what others say or think, it is not a factor in your life if you don't let it be... Puffy

After 7 years of incontenence it still bothers the hell out of me. I am still embarassed and private about it. I manage it and go on with everyday things but never without it on my mind. At times it can drive me totaly out of my mind. Combat in Vietnam was easier to handle. I am at my wits end more than not when faced with flying ,trips, weddings, etc.etc. Papa

I guess in my rant I forgot to say "Yes I do Care!" I would do anything to wake up one morning and find I was "normal" again. I read that thread about "Are you incon and DL?" and think (after something like 2600 mornings of waking up in wet diapers) wouldn't it be great if I can't be dry to actually love waking up in a wet diaper! Also to not only like wearing diapers but to actually Love it! Love seeing them wearing them enjoying them. How can you become DL? If I haven't made my point - it has really gotten to me. Papa

I wasn't trying to say anything about being a DL or loving diapers. All I was simply trying to say was that I get tired of hiding and being ashamed of being incontinent. I'd like to think that most people would be accepting of my condition. There are a few that would poke fun. I think most teenagers would be the least accepting group of people. However, I think most mature adults would be accepting of this condition. Maybe I'm wrong. I just know I get tired of being ashamed. I try to stay positive and live a happy life.

Funny I still struggle with changing in public. That's one of the main reasons I have a van. So that way when I need to change I have a place to go and do it...............................Sandy

I hear ya Sandy. My wife and I used to have a minivan but we traded it. I would change there if I needed to but nowadays, I am just so comfortable changing in public restrooms (as long as they are clean). that I don't need a van. I don't like to change in port-a-johns. They are usually disgusting. In that case I wear an extended wear diaper like the Xplus.

I change in the restrooms. I used to worry about the untaping sounds, and the crinkle while removing and installing a new diaper. However - Not anymore.

btw, Sandy - Do you have a bumper sticker that reads "If this van's a rockin' - Don't come a knockin'? I'd have to assume the van moves around while your shifting hither and fro'. (kidding, of course!)
