I love euphemisms. I suppose we should use the official NASA term -

"I am wearing my 'maximum absorbancy garment'. "

How about that?

I just use the word diaper. If we are going somewhere my wife will as if I have a fresh diaper on or if she is asking where I'm going or what I'm doing I'll just tell her I'm changing my diaper. Outside the house nothing is mentioned. I'll just tell her I need to go to the bathroom. Easier to just say what it is.

Don, The problem is, that it is not easier to say Diaper. Or for that mater "absorbant underwear, adult brief, pad, pull-on adult protection, etc., etc., etc." The real problem as I see it is that Diapers are accepted as the right term, they are after all - diapers. The problem is Incontenence is not accepted. An adult or even a teen faces true embarassing and or humiliating situations personally and from society because they have to wear and use diapers. Diapers are totaly accepted as the thing to use to control lack of bladder control. In babies it isn't even given a second thought. In the elderly/infirmed/disabled it is seen as the right thing to handle those poor unfortunate souls. But for those people who have no or almost no other condition and are perfectly "normal" otherwise it is a stigma, laughable or a reason to berate. No different that being bald, fat, old, of color or sexual orientation other than the norm. "Some old, fat son of a b. cut me off on the road today. That would be easily made into "That bedwetting jerk cut me off or Old wet pants really got up tight didn't he". Look at the posts of people who "only" have a bedwetting problem - they are torn to shreds by the embarasment they personally feel. They handle or not the wetting and only have to deal with it at night alone or with a (hopefuly) loved one but still it rips them emotionaly. But for those of us that have to deal with this 24/7 it is almost intolerable. Yes yes we say things like "It's just a different underwear" or " I got over it years ago and just go on with life, Etc." But we don't just go on with life - none of us do. We have to plan out the day, how much protection do we need? Do we bring extra diapers just in case? Does my clothing cover the bulk? Is my diaper about to leak? Where can I change? Who do i tell - not tell? The list goes on and on. Sandy (not picking on you Sand) seems as about as in control as any on here yet she once told a story about driving to pick up some parts for their business and had a major leak and flooded the truck seat and had to spend time trying to clean it all up - not uncommon to most of us, but it also showed her embarasment and frustration and like i said she seems to have such a handle on it all. Maybe it is just me...but it drives me close to the brink at times. Sorry if i have offended anyone...Papa

Hey all, I am in the group that calls it an absorbant product. I really don't like to admit I use a diaper to accomplish leaving the house for any length of time, but that is exactly what it is. To me, I have accepted that, but if I had to discuss it with anyone else which really has not occurred with me yet besides the home health care nurse who I confided in and get my supplies form, I have a real hard time calling it a diaper. Even with my doctor, all I told him was I had switched over to disposable absorbant products, never said the D work, but there is not too many dispobable products for urinary control that are not in the diaper classification. I think the stigma attached to having to use a diaper at the "in between" point in life, that being - not a baby, and not elderly (75 +) where you could expect to see it being needed is extremely difficult for almost all of us to accept, I still struggle with it now and then as well, never seems to just be totally resolved and never brought up in my mind again, probably never will.

Society has certainly done a number on peoples minds, that is for sure. How else would you expect to deal with a problem like this, stick a cork in it? :x Sorry, but that won't work, and would most likely hurt like hell, a diaper is the logical way to manage it, is effective, and looked after properly is fairly clean if you change fairly frequently. Some sort of collection device is going to be needed if you have waterwork/plumbing/bowel problems, but society has the mentality that it does not happen unless you are under 2 or over 75 or whatever age they figure you would start to lose control of bodily functions. Sorry to break it to you world, but this effects ALL ages, and is not gender/age specific like you all figure it is... you my friends have fallen into the brainwashed catagory if you think this does not happen to the teen/middle aged or just about to be a senior age groups. Walk 1 day in my shoes, that is all I can think when someone has a problem with adult diapers... I remark to them, without telling then in any certain terms I use them on a daily basis, it is only humorous until it happens to you... and once it has, life is not the same as you once knew it. I have gotten a few raised eyebrows, but have never gone any further into the conversation, I just leave it at that. Never been approached on the subject after making that remark, could care less if I was. It is not like any of us asked for this. It would not take them long after their first public wetting episode to change their tune, and see that it is a miserable condition to have to deal with on a day to day basis, and we do what we need to do to be able to have a decent quality of life without becoming a housebound recluse who is in fear of leaving the front door because of the inevitable. All a diaper does is hide the inevitable from the publics eyes, annd allows the user to be able to function in situations where he/she could not before... Simple as that, nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for listening... rant off ! Puffy

Papa, I can understand your position. At first I was the same way. My emotions ran crazy for a long time but over time I realized that these darn things wrapped around my crotch were lifesavers! They have let me do the things I always have done without any worry anymore. Up til then I would not go out with friends much and would always worry who might notice. That is no longer the case and I'm happier because of it. Call them what you will but just thank goodness for them! Nobody has ever said anything to me about it. Don't know what my reply would be. If it's someone I don't know I would probably have a smart ass comment. All of my family and friends know that I have real bladder problems since I got hurt and probably assume that I wear diapers/protection but they are more concerned about my well being not the fact that I wear a diaper. Y'all have a great day!
