I thought I'd comment just to be an active participant of the site.
Having been urinary incontinent to one degree or another all of my life I have almost always worn diapers to the doctor. They could care less.
Normally I wear cloth with plastic pants for everyday use. However when going to the doctor I wear Abri Form X Plus disposables as they are easier to remove and put back on.
Many times I have been wet and the nurse has given me a fresh dispoable to put on.
Recently my wife an I met with my urologist for annual check. I have been hoping in the back of my mind that someday the medical community might come up with an effective treatment for me. I commented to the doctor my hopes but said I am not interested in invasive proceedures or a bunch of drugs. He looked at me and said, "even if you were open to these things, there is absolutley nothing in the forseable future to help you". I was kind of bummed out but then decided if this is the only problem I have, WOW!! am I lucky!!
:D

Wow Terry, that is what I am beginning to see in life, that it could be so much worse then needing a diaper to avoid an embarassing event. I just had a visit to the doctors yesterday, but was terrified when I found out it was another dotor I was seeing due to mine being unavailable due to Emerg. surgery. I had no idea who she/he was, turned out to be she, and I was in due to a cough/cold I am fighting for what seems like way too long. I was more then slightly panicked when she wanted to listen to my chest, and to remove my shirt. I had hiked up my pants as best I could and had everything well tucked in, and if she did see, she didn't say anything to me, which was a big relief. The reply someone posted earlier when asked :why are you wearing a diaper" - I am trying to start a new fashion trend! That reply will come in handy someday for sure, as I took 15 years to finally tell my doctor I had continence issues, like bad... the xternal cath is what I told him I was using, but am sure he will find out sooner or later I am diapered more often then not! Life is good, even if you have to waddle through it! Thanks, Puff

I'm always diapered when visiting the clinic. I pretty much cannot go anywhere without wearing protection. Normally I see my primary physician and she knows my situation and never bats an eye to the fact that I am diapered. Once and a while I am forced to see a specialist or the doctor on call in the Accute Care Center. These people generally do not know that I am incontinent unless they take the time to read my medical history which they don't unless my visit is incontinence related. One of the Accute Care Center physicians had me "strip" down to my shorts not knowing that I was wearing a disposable. When he saw I was diapered he seemed utterly shocked and stated that I should see a urologist. I explained that I had been through the whole urology and neurology gammit and told him I had been diaper dependant for several years. He was very understanding and professional about it and asked me lots of questions as if he had not had much experience with incontinent patients.

I am going to see a chiropractor in a few weeks. She is not aware of my situation and I must admit that I am just a little hesitant. I will have to wear protection and since the appointment will be hands-on. I will explain my situation before she begins. I may not enjoy having to explain why I have no control my bladder to total strangers but they are medical professionals and should be able to handle it professionally. If they have a problem with it then it is their problem, not mine.

Thanks for the reply DDS, I booked another appointment for Wednesday afternoon, so will be in the same boat. As he knows about my issues, I don't feel threatened by seeing him while wearing. He is not stupid, and knows I can't be too far from the loo, so when I have to go out, I must be using something... not rocket science. The only thing that concerns him is my age, but seeing some of the people on here at 20-30 something, and my prostate history along with the MVA, I have reason to have an issue this serious, I just kept it well covered! Doing that only stressed me out and left me shaking at times in public due to anxiety over the whole issue, I feel much better in the last 3 months off-loading that heap of worry from my back. Felt like unloading a 500lb anvil from my shoulders when I did get it out, it just took a while! :P
Good luck with the chiropractor. I saw mine many times after my MVA, and he knows about the nighttime problems, as well as the urgency, as I asked him about it last visit. With limiting fluids out of the loop before I go see him for an hour+ I get away with a pull-on snugged into tight underwear, so if I do need to, at least I have it covered, most times I am good. I sure know where his washroom is located too! Along with most every one in town! :D I had whiplash so severe it took him over two weeks just to lay a hand on my as I was so jammed up he didn't want to aggrevate my pain any worse then it was. He thinks it may all be prostate and hernia related, not so much nerves, but my level of urgency is rediculous, so I tend to disagree. I still owe my well being to him, I was a serious physical mess after I got hit for a long time, and he was a major reason I can walk and fish, and ride motorcycles today... do just about anything for thayt matter! This he knows, as I have thanked him multiple times. He has to use a LOT more force to get me to adjust now compared to prior to all this, but it still feels 1000 times better when I leave his office. Take it easy, Puff

Well, this time I at least got my regular doctor! I find that the issue of incontinence to him is one he really does not want to face with me, as I am only 42 and in otherwise good health. I told him I had switched over to disposable product for the daytime, as the cath and leg bag system just is too much time and effort for shorter trips out of the house to town. For a long day travelling or whatnot, I said they are the answer, but that is not too common an occurance. I also informed him that nights have gotten more frequent, possibly because of the prostate issue, and that can defintely aggrevate the urguency he told me, and that I had ordered some heavier cloth "undergarments" to for containment purposes, underwear does not cut it at night He basically just told me to do whatever I had to do to deal with it, he never went any further. I was surprized he didn't inquire any further into just what I am using, but he knows I am using something. The urologist was the same way, he never asked what deviced I was using to manage my bladder issues, and if it were not for the internet and reading up on incontinence, a guy 20, 30 or any age for that matter would have no idea what the options are. I also found out the external system is covered by my extended benefits, but disposable and cloth products are not, oh well, just have to continue footing the bill as I have in the past. I think that he feels like he is failing at helping me with this not that it is on the table, as there is no SURE cause, and I need to use an absorbant product to have any life out of the house or work. I really don't think there will be a magic cure for me in this, it has gone on too long for that to be out there, and I am just fine with a diaper or leg bag to venture out of the house to do whatever. Just don't ask me to wear shorts! Puff

She (I'm a he) commented on my diaper not being wet while she did the prostate exam. Well, the reason I wasn't wet was because I changed just before I got there in the public restroom and had restricted my fluid intake.
Now have a new Dr. (a he) and will probable get a comment from him while he does the prostate exam.

I usually wear an Abena Extra when I go to the doctor. All of my doctors know of my incontinence. There's nothing much they can do about it. My Primary doc just lets me manage how I see fit. I have been tested and retested. I have tried many meds. I failed them all. Nothing works to my satisfaction. The only doc that has ever said anything to me did not know of my incontinence. She was a dermatologist and she was examining my skin. I took my shirt off and my diaper was sticking up out of my shorts. She just gave it a tug and said "whats up with this"? She was very nice and I just explained to her why I leaked. She was very understanding and she just said oh you poor thing. All of my doctors have been very understanding. I just have bladder and bowel incontinence. I really prefer to be left alone. I don't like going through all the tests. I don't want to live a life where I have to be poked and prodded all the time. Just let me be. The diapers don't cause me any discomfort or pain. My primary knows that and just lets me be. I like it like that.

Which brings up the rule with disposable diapers to ALWAYS carry a spare, since you never know what can or will happen. The Abena got me home with no leaks, so it didn't let me down, it just wasn't comfortable after being disturbed.

I'd like to ask , Does anybody have their Insurance pick up the cost for your diapers? I use and external device and Blue Cross takes care of that. I think if the Doctor codes it the right way you could have your Insurance pay for you supplies. Now the big question What company takes Insurance? I have asked a few company's and they have said no!
