Well, Charlie, the concern about UTIs is significant. I have ended up in hospital with one on a number of occasions - a whole week of intravenous antibiotics to put things right so they are certainly to be avoided. There are some things that help, though, they just aren't wholly helpful.

1. Drink Cranberry Juice - 200 ml a day can significantly help. However, watch what you buy some so-called cranberry juice is quite lacking in its key ingredient so check the label.

2. Make sure you drink a lot. This sounds counter-productive as there is going to me more output but the thing is that the output is much thinner and less likely to cause problems. It is often suggested people drink a couple of litres a day and that is fine but drink more if you can and manage the output as it will help.

3. Sorry, but at least one self-cath a day would make a big difference too.

These are probably not new things to you nor ones you may want to hear but they will keep you healthier than anything else you can do.

True words.

I have ruled out a stent now to be honest, I have now seen some images and they are not good.

I will talk about surgery though, i just dont like caths, I used an fr7 last time and because my bladder spincter is soo tight shut even that was a problem for the nurse.

That sort of give you an idea how hard it is for me to place anything in there without pain and discomfort.

deen_ad, if you are experiencing pain you really need to check the whole thing with a urologist as it is possible you have problems with the sphincters opening together. Sometimes this fails to happen and the bladder s pushing away against a shut external sphincter which does cause pain.

Believe me I've been checked many times! Just seems like the muscles aren't co-ordinated. I have MS so loss of control is to be expected.

It means snap as in the card game...He has the same as you!

I met with my Urologist this week and spoke to him about this. He actually admitted this wasn't his area of specialty. i.e spinal trauma and nerve damage incontinence so he has reffered me to another specialist Urologist who basically deals with my type of injurys on a daily basis.

He didnt reccommend an sphincerectomy. He said that if I got to the point that it was being pumped into my kidneys then thats a different story but for now he wants me to keep going on as I am.

But he did say, see what the nerve urologist suggests.

I will keep you all posted.
