Hi, This is my first post, And I'm looking for some help. I'm 43 and have been having problems with trouble getting started, weak stream, And and blood in my urine. I also cannot urinate until the pressure in my bladder is almost unbearable, then it seems to start when it wants to. Which has caused me some embarrassing situations. I went for my first appt. with the urologist today and he told me my prostate was not enlarged, but i had blood and puss in my urine. He put me on uroxatral and keflex. Has anyone had symptoms like this or used uroxatral? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi avg_guy. Yours sounds similar to my initial experience way back when; except, I had an extra event/complication.

At that time, I had very much the same issues as you. As it turned out, it seemed to be a "simple" bladder infection that an antibiotic (cipro) knocked out. Alas, what I didn't know was that it was related to a recent surgery that I had had and had damaged my sphincter during a catheter insertion.

So my advice would be to keep following up with your urologist. A good one is a wealth of knowledge and help. And if you don't get satisfactory answers, try another one. It took me a couple of tries before I found one that was willing to work with me (rather than "on me").

I have not yet tried uroxatral, so I can't comment there. Keflex is another type of antibiotic like what the cipro I was on. so if it's an infection, the keflex should take care of it.

Meanwhile, in order to stop the embarrassing situations, you may want to consider some type of protection. Perhaps a male guard (I'm assuming you are male based on your author name) at the least; something more if needed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice IluvLA. I called my urologist on Friday as my symptoms have gotten alot worse. I started having bladder spasms that are so painful they take my breath away, and intense pain when urinating, (which now happens when the spasms start). He put me on pyridium for the pain which seems to help alot. I went and got some attends pullups as the guards I was using weren't working to well. The only problem is the uroxatral I'm on makes me so thirsty I'm drinking alot of water and I went through all 14 pullups in one day. Anyone know if there is a more absorbent pullup available? I really like the convenience of being able to pull them down like underwear for the occasional time I can make it to the bathroom before I wet myself. Thanks

Hi Avg_guy
It's good your seeing a doctor! As far as protection I'd recommend the tape on diapers if your changing that often. You can get the cloth like ones that you can often tape an un tape multiple times. And you don't have to take your shoes/pants etc. off to change. Men often can use a tape on diaper like a pull up if they're careful. Us women like myself who have more the hour glass shape tend to have a hard time pulling down a diaper because our waist is so much smaller then our hips :? I use to leave the top tapes a little lose and just make the bottom ones tight. So if I could make it to the Bathroom I could pull it down. But often I'd need to use some masking tape when I'd pull it back on. But now days I think most of the cloth backed ones use the Velcro tapes which can be untaped and re taped multiple times.

On another note you may want to add a booster in your protection if your wetting that often. You can buy boosters or some people just use Baby diapers as boosters just poke a few holes in the plastic backing. Lately I've been just using full length shields as boosters.

Hi Sandy,
Thanks for the advice. I went to my local pharmacy and bought a package of attends diapers, These are blue color and have 2 tapes on each side. I have to say they aren't much better then the attends pullups. So back to the pharmacy I went, and bought a package of Tena supers. These hold alot more but the velcro tapes don't hold worth a toot. And the cloth like cover rubs my legs raw. So back to the pharmacy I went and they didnt have any other diapers, so I bought a pack of tena overnight pads and put them in the attends. This is working pretty well for the time being. I have been doing alot of research online about the other brands of diapers and I think I'm going to order some abri-form x plus's. The uroxatrol they put me on makes me so thirsty it seems like I drink 2 gallons of water a day(and by looking at my diapers I must be) and as I'm sure you know what goes in must come out. I sure am glad I found this forum, It sure is good to have someone to talk to about this, as this is pretty hard to take going from using the bathroom to using diapers in a week. Thanks so much again

As you have already found out, local stores/medical supply don't normally carry high capacity adult diapers. Like Sandy said, a full blown tape on diaper will be much better for you. Being a man we have one feature that sometimes helps. You don't always have to pull the diaper down if you have enough room to pull just the front down a little so you can pull it out.

When I drink more, I too must make sure that I have a good quality diaper on so that I don't leak and or have to change as often. From all your reading and if you have looked at some of the past post on here, you will see we all have different ways and brands of diapers to help us continue to live the quality of life we want to.

I have been like many others here and have tried different diapers and stuffer to try and save money. I have bit the bullet and for the most part wear either the Secure Personal XPlus or the Abena XPlus. On a normal day I usually only go through 3 in 24hrs. If I cut back on my fluids, I have gotten by with only 2 but then I pay for that later with other side affects my body hands out. On a really bad day I have gone through 5 in a 24hr period.

I pray that the urologist can find what is causing your problems and treats it so that you don't have to live wearing diapers. But I can already tell that you are a quick learner and will not let this stop you from living.
I also pray that while you are having this problem that you can find the right adult diaper or pull-ups that will work for you. Once you find something that you can trust in, you will find that your stress level will go down and things start to become much easier.

Keep your chin held high.

Went back to the Urologist yesterday because my bladder spasms were getting worse and big chunks of skin were coming out when i urinated, also alot of blood. Well he tried to do a cystoscopy to see into my bladder, but couldn't get the scope in because of a urethral stricture. On the 20th he is going to do surgery try to open it up. I ordered some abena x-plus diapers, and they are working great, I can actually sleep through the night now. It's amazing how huge they are in the morning...and no leaks!!! Thanks for all the advice.

avg_guy,

something else you may want to consider...if you find you can still make it sometimes but still want proection for the inevitable full flood.. from my experience, the latest Tena diaper has very good qualities for velcro tapes. Back when i had probelms severe enough to need protection, i tried both Attends breathable and Tena Ultra. I loved tena's fit.. and the tape design was better than on the attends brethable. Now, since you seem to need more absorbency i did, you may want to consider Tena Super. While it is not absorbent as Abena Abri-X Plus, it does allow for easier toilet use. Perhaps reserve the X-Plus for night time, and use a lighter product in the day? Also, i think the new Molicare super has breathable sides with velcro tapes..maybe give them a try?

Good luck with the doctor.. there is hope that your symptoms are resovable. They sound similar to what mine were.. i ended up having a voiding dysfunction because my bladder didnt empty all the way sometimes, which led to repeated bathroom visits, which in turn reduced bladder capacity..but once we figured out the root cause... things got better.. im now pad free.. while i cant guarantee the same outcome for you, because every situation is different, the docs are going to do their best to help you.

One final note.. make sure the urologist who perfroms the surgery on the stricture is top-notch..someone you trust..because you dont want him to get too close to the sphincter..one wrong move could obliterate the sphicnter valve..making your incontinence problem even worse.. so make sure your'e being cared for
