JRB, that was good news up to the accident.....sorry about that aggravation. Incontinence, especially when "spotty" can be a lot tougher to handle than when it is constant and one knows one has to wear a diaper and that's all there is to it.
You enjoyed a month of control and got out of diapers, which is great, ofcourse! Wetting your pants suddenly out in public is a tough blow to take and I understand you don't want to give up and "go back" to diapers.
I urge you to wear pull ons just as you mentioned. They are ideal "just in case" protection. I feel they are more comfortable than a tape on diaper and remain comfortable until you wet them. You feared a pull on would not have helped your flood....but I question that! Sure, store brand pull ons (called underwear) that are on every store shelf are not adequate but pull ons you find on line are up to your needs. I recommend XPMedical for a good web site and look at the "heavy protection/overnight" pull on products. I rate Abena's pull on "overnight" tops followed closely by Medline's "extended wear / overnight" pull on.
To touch on cost, especially when the pull on most likely won't get use in your case except for rare instances, consider wearing cotton underwear like jockey shorts and wear the pull on diaper over that. If the day is dry, then the jockey shorts go in the wash and the pull on is saved for another day. The hygiene factor provided by the cotton underwear may allow use of the pull on for days before you feel it needs to be discarded for hygiene reasons. But at less than $2 per diaper, getting even three or four days out of one, cuts your cost to less than 50 cents a day....the cost of your "insurance" that you won't suffer the embarrassment of wetting your pants.
Cloth diapering may not appeal to you at all but I'd like to touch on it anyway, if I might. You (or anyone in your situation of control most of the time and seeking "just in case" protection) might consider wearing a good pull on cloth diaper pant. Covered with a breathable waterproof pant (not plastic pants) it can be very comfortable tho there will be some bulk so it won't feel like you are wearing normal underwear, but most won't find it objectionable. The unused cloth pull on gets laundered just like regular underwear so you feel fresh every day and no cost of tossing a disposable product. My picks are KINS for the pull on diaper and Changing Times Diaper Co for waterproof pants.
