Advice: Diapers and Bikepacking Trip

Sat May 16, 2020 1:51 pm

Several friends and I are planning a several day bikepacking trip in Florida this fall. They do not know about my incontinence or my need to wear diapers. I am not inclined to tell them unless a situation arises when I feel compelled to do so. I will try and be as discreet as possible within reason but I also accept the reality of telling them.

The reality of this trip is I will be drinking a lot, toilets will be scare, chaffing will be an issue. My plan is to wear a premium diaper and change whenever I can. My bike shorts are black so a leak isn't noticeable anyway.

Has anyone done a bikepacking trip? Any advice?

thanks

Hi pals!

Wow, I don´t know what to say....IMHO if you are quite sure that you´ll be obliged to recognise your issue to them, then do it! I think it´s better to do it volonteer before you have no other option. Anyway, by your words u seem quite confident about abd that u have very assumed, and then it shouldn´t be any drama. Besides, most of us who had talked about with friends usually got a veru good response, very natural and with absolutely any drama about. But u can´t bet about. The advantage is that in the case of a bad response from them u realize then that they are no good friends, nor for u nor for anybody. That´s the only way I can contribute, but my advice is that go ahead, it will be all right, you´ll see. And have fun in Florida!! Byeeee

May I second Lord Duque's response? I have lived in an Army pup tent with another soldier, and I do not see how, if this will be your accommodation, you will be able to continue being discreet. If I were not already incontinent, being up close and personal with a Florida alligator would push me over the edge. Good luck with your trip, your companions, and all the critters you're likely to meet.

I'd use male guard pads as inserts into a quality pull-up diaper like an Abena Abri-Flex or Molicare Mobile. You can change out the pad on-the-fly very easily and stash it in your backpack until you can dispose it in an appropriate place. The pads are small enough that you can carry a lot of them in your back pack. Although I haven't done this on a bike hike I have done it several times on trips in close quarters with good friends and it has worked out very well.

If you're cycling in a warm climate for any length of time, you'll get really sweaty! This will make the diaper last a lot less - even cycling to my local town in the heat does that to me, so cycling round Florida will be another matter.

This trip is scheduled for post hurricane season?

Thanks for the great input.
My buddy lives in florida and is planning the trip. He's gonna map out the route and the points where we will overnight. He's done this in the past and the rest of us are deferring to him. I am going to let him worry about the details of the actual trip itself.
The guys are pretty cool. Even if they notice me wearing a diaper, they probably won't say anything. I am also not going to say anything unless I have to. I am not so worried about this either.
One of you mentioned that the integrity and performance of the diaper will be worse with riding and the heat. That is my concern. Any comments about how much worse a premium diaper's performance will be or whether the diaper could actually break up because of the movement of the hips and thighs.
For example, a leak won't be a big deal. However, if the layers of the diaper separate and I have SAP material exposed, thats a different story

thanks so much. You are all great!

have you tried some long-distance rides with the products you plan on using? I think this would be an excellent way to see what will and won't work for your trip. better to know ahead of time. maybe due to the motion the pads in a pull-up may work.. because you are riding a bike most of the fluid should be lost through sweat so urine leakage may be reduced. anyway, you should do some experiments at home before the trip this will make the trip much more enjoyable as you wont be having any fears in the back of your head.
