My husband and I went to the Iola Car Show yesterday. I think they should call it the Iola swap meet. We walked for most of the day in the swap area and saw maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of it. But talk about HOT!! and humid. Not a good place to have on heavy protection. At times I felt like the inside of my diaper was burning up  I Drank enough water that I changed several times but still managed to get the start of a rash in my crotch area  I used disposables As hot as it was Cloth with plastic pants didn't seem like a good idea.

I forgot what fun it is to change in a portable jon and how disgusting they are :? Of course they did have handicap ones there but were always taken by the none handicap people :x Should have gone today Much cooler and the humidity is way down :?

Sandy, I fully understand where you are coming from. I went sailing on my boat with a new friend I met at an inco group to escape the heat. She wears disposables I wear cloth mostly. The heat was in the 90s and the humidity was off the chart. By lunch (we left at 9am) she had to change into her second diaper while my cloth was still holding out. Between the water and then a few cold beers - couldn't resist in the heat - she had only brought one spare diaper. When she said her second diaper was also soaked I anchored and we decided to change into out bathing suits and go for a swim. We stayed in our suits and agreeded to just go for a dip to wash off every now and then and I just threw a pail of water over the (waterproof) cushions every now and then to rinse them. It was embarassing for both of us but after the second beer we just laughed it off. The heat was horrible and we stayed out way past my planned time. As we returned she had to put on one of my spare cloth diapers - i keep extras on the boat - her first time in cloth in years - 2 failed marriages partly because of her incon. Luckly her sundress hid the extra bulk. But we avoided the heat/diaper rash and got through the day. Papa

Hey Papa
I'm so happy for you that you found what sounds like a wonderful person :) So has the relationship made it to girl friend status yet :?: I can imagine how uncomfortable it must have been to be without protection in the cockpit. but the fact that you both were able to do that together sounds like your relationship is beginning to mature.

I remember being in a similar situation with my husband when we were first married on a power boat of ours. Well that one was his before it was ours well you know what I mean. I was in a swim suit we had been swimming. I had gotten out of the water went to go and change down in the cabin and come to find out I had forgot to bring extra diapers.

I spent the afternoon in a swimsuit doing much the same as you described :? I tried to just sit on a towel but that didn't work out very well. So as you said I went swimming a little more than I had planed. I remember how self conscious I felt  We were basically newly weds.

But then maybe that's when I really started to realize who this man was and the level of compassion and love that he had for me. :) That boat at the time was his pride and joy and I was leaking urine all over it  and he never once said anything negative to me. He just did as you did papa he would take a bucket of water and rinse off the seat or floor or whatever every so often and we still managed to have a wonderful day. But needless to say I never came up short on diapers while boating again. Like our vehicles I keep a stash of diapers on the boats as well

Great thread! Got my interest captured as this is one area I cannot enjoy and posted the thought on "What has your incon prevented you from doing".

In both cases, here, Papa and Sandy were in "friendly" territory with no real need to hide diaper wear, other than I can imagine some degree of embarassment remains. Boats with waterproof interiors are wonderful. I do wonder tho, about the upholstery in speed boats....tho it is vinyl on the surface, there perhaps can be some leakage thru the seams into the foam inside. Lake or seawater most likely would never be a problem, but urine is another matter with aging and the awful odor.

I enjoyed sailing on my small 18' sail boat and the cockpit was all fiberglass and all wetness in the cockpit could flow easily aft and out the transome drains.

My "problem" with incon stopping me is where friends do not know about my diapers and I don't wish to disclose. I'd love to try water skiing or tubing but returning to the boat will result in my peeing at some time within the boat, long before we get back to shore and break up so I can go my way and get back into a dipaer. I just don't like the idea of "secretly" peeing in someone's boat.

In both cases here, there was no need to hide it and washing off the seats with a bucket of water worked out well and both Sandy and Papa enjoyed boating as it's meant to be enjoyed.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy boating and going out, but I have a good diaper on under my shorts. I do not wear a bathing suit since I'm not going in the water. All my boating friends just think I am not a water sports fan and just don't care for swimming in deep water. I go in the water at the beach since I am in control of where I'll be leaking until I can go change out of the wet bathing suit.

Sandy,
I know just what you are saying and experiencing, with heat and hunidity and sweating and diapers.

Just as Papa pointed out how he was pretty comfortable in cloth diapers in the heat, I want to jump in and agree, and hope to have you try the cloth in the heat.

But I want to add a couple of things I feel are very important.

First I'd say you have to effectively fight sag. A sagging diaper is uncomfortable under any conditions but it becomes downright intolerable in the heat. Disposables, because they must be changed more often, do better in this regard if taped on snugly. But cloth lasts longer and will be comfortable (believe it or not) if you can keep them up! Best way is with the suspender briefs but a very close second is the body suit. Not a onzie, which I consider too soft and it lacks real support, but a real body suit that snaps in the crotch and is 90% cotton for comfort and 10% lycra which provides the compression and decent support for a diaper assuming it is pinned snugly to start with. <bodysuit.com>

Second, consider waterproof pants made of nylon or other synthetic material that is coated with polyurethane. They do a very decent job keeping your clothing dry. Yes they feel a bit clammy in the crotch after your diaper gets wet, but that's a good thing on a hot day; evaporative cooling is taking place in your hot, between the legs, area. The nylon outer of the waterproof pants has better slip and will chaffe less or not at all. There are many; one of my favorites is Duratex (DuralineMedical) for plain white and now I've added the colorful adult prints found in the Bumpkins waterproof pants offered by ChangingTimesDiaperCo. Both links are on our links page.

I know I am a serious cloth diaper fan, but I do believe my cloth diaper is more comfortable than a disposable in the extreme heat. I also can understand the reluctance to pull on a pair of plastic pants since one thinks "instant heat" and to some degree that is true. Before I discoverd nylon waterproof pants many years ago, I relied on powder and reapplication several times a day. That works well if you can break away and sneak some talc into the crotch area. It is pretty essential with plastic pants and not so necessary with the nylon pants, tho it still helps when ever you can do it. I keep talc in the car, of course, since I can get to my car somewhat periodically.

Keep smiling, Sandy, we'll be shivering again before we know it and wearing long johns over our diapers and plastic pants.

Well you guys it wasn't the cloth so much as it was the plastic pants or should I say "vinyl pants" that turned me off the other day at the car show. But at the same time with the number of changes I did the amount of powder I used. There was a couple of times that those porta potties were a cloud inside  I don't think it would had made much of a difference in avoiding the heat rash

You had mention the sag of cloth as it gets wet? In a situation like that I would have more then likely used some mesh panties to help control the sag of the cloth diaper. Dress wise I would have wore my shorts style overalls.

I had on a pair of loose fitting polyester shorts and a pair of mesh pants over the diaper. When I began to get the heat rash I got rid of the mesh pants. That way it didn't hold the diaper tight to my crotch and would allow a little air there :?: I'm not sure if that helped or not :? Once the rash started it started and it seemed there was turning back :(

Sandy and all of the Gang,
Ypu're right about wearing a cloth diaper and doing a long day outing. I wouldn't mind doing cloth in that situation, but you would have to carry a diaper bag around to keep up with your soiled diapers.
Disposables are the way to go. I usually don't get a rash, but I've a couple of close calls in that type of a situation.
I'm thinking seriously of using cloth at work. I'm making some custom flat diapers that will not show too bad under my slacks. ..........Paul Martin

I have to agree with Sandy about the plastic/vinyl pants causing lots of heat. I don't wear cloth, but do at times wear plastic pants over my disposables when I am going to be out for log time. Thank God, I haven't had a rash but darn close to it. My big test will be coming next week when we will be doing a lot of auto travel. At least there will be A/C in the car but still not looking forward to when we get out at places when it's hot out.

As far as heat build up in plastic pants I have found that snap-on plastic pants are much better to wear over your diapers (cloth or disposables) in the heat of the day. At night if you are a side sleeper its not so good of an idea - obviously. Air flow and light clothing are key to keepiong the rash away. Lots of activity can also cause irritation - Sandy was obviously active running around the show. Sitting in the shade on a boat was less likley to cause diaper rash. We are constantly learning what to avoid and what we can do under many situations. I still prefer cloth diapers under most conditions, Papa
