Hello,

I am a 46 years old man , I am type 2 diabetic for about 25 years. My sugar is still fairly well controlled. Besides diabetes, I really have no health problems except that I will describe.

I wonder if my problem can be urinary incontinence. For about 18 months, I have urinary urgency. Initially, these problems were rather annoying but nothing serious. For about six months, emergencies began to annoy me in my activities to the point that I am now obliged to consider it.

When I feel an urge to urinate, I have about 3 to 5 minutes to find a washroom. After that, I feel a discomfort in the lower abdomen and I really have to go to the toilet.

At this point, it is fortunately never happened to have leakage of urine but believe me it came very close to happen.

My questions:
Is my problem can be identified as the beginning of urinary incontinence?
Since the problem has worsened over a period of 18 months, is that it could be a urinary tract infection?

Thank you

Both men and women who have had diabetes for many years may develop nerve damage that affects bladder control. I recall reading a report where up to 50% of diabetics can have urinary incontinence problems.

For me, when I've had UTI's, I hate to think about the pain I've had when passing urine, very painful. Usually, they doctor will want to do a usrine sample test to verify you do have a UTI.

Welcome to the group

since your problem has gotten worse over time your really should see your doctor for some tests and get a referal to an urologist.

iC issues can be caused by multiple conditions so getting checked out by an urologist is recommended.
As Hugh as already stated diabetes can be one cause's but there are other conditions that can cause bladder issues

Keep us in the loop when you go for tests and remember you are not slone and we are all here to help and support each other

I am also a diabetic on insulin and have what is called urgency incontinence, I have 30 to 60 seconds from when I feel the urge to urinate. My prostate is enlarged, the good news is the biopsy is negative for cancer.

I recommend that you have your prostate checked. If it has enlarged, that could be part of your problem. I do not think you have a urinary track infection as I have had one in the past and it is extremely painful.

That does sound like the beginnings of urge incontinence. You could A: do nothing and hope it goes away (which it won't), or B: go see a urologist and get checked out.

Hi, I had an appointment this morning to follow up on diabetes, so I met the nurse at the clinic. I told him of my frequent urination troubles and discomforts seen just before urinating. The nurse seems to be certain that my urinary problems are not connected to a UTI and propose to discuss it with my GP. The only thing that bothers me is that my doctor is on vacation for five weeks, I will have to wait until his return to learn more about what is happening.

Meanwhile, the nurse asked me to minimize anything that might cause irritation of the urinary system, such as soda, alcohol and coffee. I also advise to avoid what is based on citrus and consuming water and occasionally cranberry juice base.

In terms of my diabetes, my blood tests are good and my weight is stable with a slight weight loss.

I have still a question, what is incontinence? Is is only connected to an inability to keep liquids and solids within and dispose when desired or rather when we must adjust our lifestyles to cope with the need to use restrooms?
Thanks for your help and support.

PS English is not my native language. It's possible that writing may seem a bit disorganized, so please forgive me.

Mjlbt, the two are related. Incontinence is a loss of bodily control, the involuntary loss of urine or feces. We seem to be discussing the question of severity? If you were not experiencing at least some loss of bladder control you would not need to rush to find a restroom. You may be partially incontinent, but only mildly so. However, your doctor will have to make that diagnosis.
