Anti-depressants and incontinence

Hi people

I'm currently on a lot of meds for ADHD and depression. Now whilst I've always had incontinence issues, I have noticed that after a few months of sertraline that I'm now dribbling quite a lot - for almost most of the day sometimes. I've also noticed that the feelings of "needing to go" seem to be a lot less strong. This hasn't made much of a difference to me as I wear 24/7 and I'm not getting through any more nappies than I used to.

What concerns me is that I read in a study (I know online info isn't the most reliable source) that there is a 0% success rate of regaining continence amongst people who have become incontinent after taking sertraline. Now whilst I already have urgency issues, I am going to try the local continence clinic again soon and if they are able to help with my urgency and #2 accidents then that would be amazing, but what if the dribbling still remains?

Does anybody have any experience of this from taking anti-depressants?

I take Fluoxetine, which is in the same family as Zoloft, and hadn't heard of any link to incontinence. Please do keep us posted!

Yeah, it's apparently not that well known to as many people as one might expect. It's actually listed in the side effects section of the leaflet inside the latest pack of Sertraline I got from Boots here in the UK. I've read in a few places online that there is some evidence of a link between anti-depressants and incontinence. This was all found online to be fair, so it's never concrete. I can say though that I've seen this mentioned on a lot of sites and most of them looked legit

I take Venlafaxine and have similar issues. You are not alone.

I take amitriptyline for headaches associated with a concussion. It is apparantly an anti-depressant of sorts. I just checked out the side effects online due to reading this post. Quite interesting. My favorite part is that I should call my doctor imidiately if I suffer a coma.

Tom - have you been to a doctor about the incontinence caused by your meds?

Thanks for that information!! I also take amitriptyline, 75mg every night, to treat the secondary symptoms of my TBI. It was a scary read, but not taking the medicine was even worse. And if you can call a doctor while in a coma, then you're not doing it right!!!

Too many times. I tried many different Rx and they all had nasty side effects. I also have high blood pressure caused by my ADs, and I medicate for that.

Mike, I take 50mg every night to stem the headaches from the Post Concussive Syndrome. When I went from 25mg to 50mg my Dr. warned me about the side effects of constipation and dry mouth but that was about it. She already knew of the incontinence I have been experiencing and since it was a pre-existing condition, I don't think she gave it much thought as a side effect.

I was prescribed Amytripltlene by my PCP for my interstitial cystitis (not yet diagnosed) he said it had a secondary effect of causing urinary retention and maybe I wouldn't be peeing 25 times a day. Well, it worked ok for that, I was down to 15-17 times, however, I slept for 18 hours the first time I took it, and only slightly less the second time. It also made me impotent, as if there is a chance of impotence, I'm going to be the guy that has those problems. My wife and I only do it 2-3 times a month anyway and there aren't any re-do's if it doesn't work.......if it doesn't work, she's like, see you in a couple weeks......our sex life is fucking atrocious for 34 years old......I'm still raring to go and she couldn't be bothered usually. It makes me so angry......
