Trying something new since I have been issued a CPAP machine to help me sleep, so I was trying not to take my sleep meds. Big mistake. On the 3rd night of not taking it, I was up till 230 last night. My wife asked me this morning what was I thinking that caused me to stay awake which is usually the case, but this time it was nothing. I tried my relaxation exercises and still nothing. So not to wake her I went to the living room and watched TV and surfed the internet till I could go to sleep. Needless to say I didn't go to work today. Well that is another pill I still have to take.

Batman,

Just like with the diapers, if you need pills to sleep, you need pills to sleep. Just something to get used to and accept..

I can relate, I have them, but don't like to take them if I can avoid it, mostly weekends, when I can suffer with a few less hours. Couple of the other meds I am on cause drowsiness, so that helps getting to sleep. Just another thing in life at this point! Puffy

I have sleep apnea aswell and I also have a cpap machine which I still haven't gotten used to wearing yet myself. When it comes to taking sleeping pills, I take them because I cant fall asleep naturally because of severe insomnia. If I didn't take sleep meds I would end up staying up for a few days straight and eventually pass out from sleep deprivation. So my opinion, taking sleep meds is worth it, especially If you need to wear the cpap machine because that can keep you up aswell.

Anyone ever try any "White noise" cd's or lullaby music kind of stuff for going to sleep with. I had decent success with a fan sound effect playing for a couple of hours, I never hear the end of the CD most times, and tried the "Delta Wave" stuff off or YouTube, but just too strange a sound to relax to. Something different to look at if you still struggle with getting to sleep, lots out there to listen to! ZZzzzzzzz... Puffy

Puffy, I will say some of my best and deepest sleep was when I was at sea. The hum of the fans and the cold berthing area made it very easy to quickly go to sleep and stay asleep. Plus, the rocking motion of the ship. That also could have been due to the long stressful days and being on constant awareness of your surroundings. When it was time to crawl into your 2 1/2 foot by 6 foot rack all you wanted to do was sleep.

I would try the white noise, but I know it would drive my wife nuts.

I've been have no some trouble with getting to sleep as well. I've NEVER had problems sleeping, it's no fun....one of my councilors gave me a prescription for risperidol recently to help me get to sleep. She was also hoping it would help to stabilize my moods as well. Sometimes I'm a bit snappy with the wife and kids......the risperidol seems to be helping get me to sleep. I also use melatonin (a natural sleep aid) that works quite well also. As a last resort I can take some ativan, but don't want to use benzodiazepines to help me sleep.........
