I completely agre WetDad. As a country we do meddle in too much. I disagree with the strategy presented, training moderate rebels to fight the extremist rebels. Does no one remember the Taliban that we armed and trained to fight Russia out of Afghanistan and then we ended up fighting them in the gulf war?

Good point there! I do remember us setting up the Taliban - I think we called them the Mujahadin then - to fight off the Russians, which they did very well! Shame we messed up on having to fight them later...

I think one has to be careful in making judgements on Isis and the countries fighting ISIS. It is clear that ISIS, while probably pretty close to mainstream Muslim theology, is one of the nastiest and most brutal regimes we have had in the world for some centuries. Countries of the West cannot just sit back and ignore them in the hope they go away - they won't. Someone has to tackle them and if not us and the counties surround their land of hate, who is?

As an old-time history major, I cannot resist the opportunity to join this conversation. We can all thank Sir Winston Churchill. During WW I Churchill thought that an allied invasion of Turkey by sea was a wonderful idea. The allies tried, and the Turkish army routed the allied landing force at Gallipoli. Everybody remembered this defeat when the time came for the Normandy invasion some three decades later. However, the allies did win WW I, and at the Conference of Cairo, in the summer of 1919, Churchill dictated the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. At the time, the Ottoman Empire did not have national borders; countless tribes roamed pretty much at will, following their herds much as they had for thousands of years previously. Churchill insisted that the Turkish Empire be divided into discrete nation states, on the European model, completely ignoring the wisdom of the defeated Turks. Churchill, at the Cairo Conference, created the mess that we must now confront. Cleaning uup this mess will take decades, perhaps centuries.

I am open to anything except crack pot.
I got my slow cooker a while ago, and the hope of having a few functional days make me long for some homemade real healthy food. As long as I can get the ingredients, and not too costly, it's fine.
Please no soup boxes or semi finished products, as I will not be able to get them here...
A little grandma Duck style would be of interest.

Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Ingredients
• 1 packet teriyaki marinade (recommended: McCormick Grill Mates)
• 1 tablespoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
• 3 1/2 pounds pork shoulder
• 1/2 cup chicken broth
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/4 cup soy sauce
• 1 cup chili sauce
• 1 (6-ounce) can pineapple juice
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 2 carrots, chopped
• 8 hamburger rolls
• Hawaiian Sauce:
• 2 tablespoon canola oil
• 1 tablespoon ginger, chopped
• 2 teaspoons garlic, chopped

Directions
In small bowl, combine teriyaki mix, paprika and pepper.
Coat the pork the with rub mixture, patting until all rub is used. Set aside.
In a bowl whisk together the chicken broth, brown sugar, soy sauce, chili sauce and pineapple juice. Set aside.
Put the chopped onions and carrots in a 5-quart slow cooker. Place the pork on top of the carrots and onions and pour half of the pineapple juice mixture over pork. Reserve remainder for Hawaiian sauce. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours. The meat should fall apart easily. Remove the roast from the slow cooker to a cutting board. Using 2 forks carefully pull the meat into shreds. Serve the pork on rolls drizzled with the Hawaiian sauce or on the side for dipping. Reserve the remaining pulled pork for the Round 2 Recipes, Pulled Pork Pot Stickers and Hawaiian Pizza.
Hawaiian Sauce:
In a medium pot heat the oil over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger and saute until soft, about 2 minutes. Add the remaining pineapple juice mixture, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

I will post them here if I can. I have a bunch saved on my home computer so I may have to attach them somehow. And I need to remember to do that at home. I usually am on here at work and forget when I am at home.
