I've asked Sandy if we can move the discussion to this Formum as it likely to be of interest to a lot of disposable wearers who have thoght about trying cloth diapers but either have never gotten around to it or find it somewhat confusing and costly and have no idea where to start.

Paul and Sandy and I have this thread going where Sandy is about to make the plunge and try cloth diapers.

We recommended a good pull on diaper from Loving Comfort that was heavier and would provide real protection as compared to the "training pants" type of pull on that isn't as good as a decent disposable for protection.

But Loving Comfort seems to be out of business; Sandy cancelled her order and now wonders where to go.

In the thread just below this one, Sandy wonders if the Velcro attachment would be better for day time use. I say absolutely! The pull on diaper pant relies on waist elastic to hold it up. That's fine for overnight when you are in bed, but when you are up and around, wetting the pull on diaper is going to make it heavy and uncomfortable as it sags. and as Sandy points out, a big hassle to change if you are wearing pants or slacks, since they have to come off, along with shoes!

We want to stay away from pins and prfold diapers because it's a big hassle and not to be undertaken until one is sure they like cloth diapers.

So a cloth brief makes perfect sense. A disposable brief tapes on and a cloth brief goes on with "hook and loop" fastening. Velcro is the original and possibly the best there is. I've had poor results with my first hook and loop fastening diaper many years ago. It didn't stand up to laundering and soon I could not wear the diaper without pinning it!

BUT! that was then, and this is now.

Sandy, hold off a bit and let Paul and myself investigate the potential for diapers with (real) Velcro fastening.

Paul has already ordered the LilMiracle diaper and I have just ordered a diaper from BabyKins. Both are made in Canada and both claim to use Velcro for the fastening. It's going to take some time, since it means wash cycles, but we will keep you all informed on how it is going!

IF the Velcro works out, the "Velcro-On" cloth diaper is going to be our top pick for a disposable wearer contemplating trying cloth. They would be superior to the elastic waist pull on diaper since they can be worn day and night.

Let me repeat one more time, the elastic waist pull on diaper pant (and the disposable underwear product) is only appropriate for daytime wear for those who need "just in case" protection and can get to a toilet as needed most of the time to avoid getting the pull on wet- because once it starts getting wet, it will sag and be most uncomfortable and make you wish you were wearing a trusty tape on disposable.

Well, we hope to offer the "Velcro-On" cloth as a good or better alternative to the tape on disposable brief.

I've copied Sandy's post from yesterday in General Discussion:

"I did cancel it Were do I go now and how long does that other place (the name escapes me) that I got the lace plastic pants at take to deliver in general.................Sandy"

As you read above, Paul and I are embarking on a serious test of Velcro fastening. But both suppliers are in Canada and typically take about three weeks for delivery to the US.

I'm sure Paul is still waiting for his Indisposable (tm) from LilMiracle and I don't expect my BabyKins (tm) Velcro (tm) diaper until Oct 20th or later!

Then there is the time necessary to wear and launder them since that's what will make or break the hook and loop fastening.

Realistically, it will be nearly Thanksgiving before we could give any reliable assurance the hook and loop is standing up.

Sandy,
Here's some input that might help you in deciding what type cloth diaper to try.
I have received and now wearing the lil' miricle Velcro diaper. I am very pleased on the fit and absorbtion. I do add some cloth baby diapers with that diaper. With the velcro, you can get it real snug. I'm definantly going tp buy more of these if the velcro system holds up.
I have put this diaper through only 5 washings. It shows no signs of any problem with the velcro. I do fasten the velcro together when I wash and dry them. They also dry pretty fast too.
Sandy, If you want to try this diaper, they ship out of Canada, and it will take about two weeks if you pick one that they have in stock. Their customer service dept. will let you know if the diaper is in stock. They do have some very cute prints that I think you would like, but they also have white. I did have some bleeding of the dyes on to my plastic pants after the first wearing. I washed it first too.
Sandy, if you want to start right away, you will not go wrong ordering from LL medico with their pull on diaper. I've been using this one for several months. They have plenty of room in the brief to accept cloth baby diapers. One plus with LL Medico, Sandy, is that their diapers and plastic pants is in stock and ready to ship. I receive my orders from them usually 3 to 4 dyas after I place my order.
They have a good supply of plastic pants too. I've bought their plastic pants for many years. They also have many plastic pants in prints. I've ordered their "Babys" print several times. They're ultra soft plastic. I would stick with their "very soft" line. They are softer and not as stiff as some of their other prints. Check out their "swatch" window and see how they describe each pair.
Sandy, if you have any more questions, just post me back, Joe my want to add some things to my post. I hope you're not too discouraged from this set back. It will be worth the wait. ..........Paul

Quoting Paul:

"Sandy, if you have any more questions, just post me back, Joe may want to add some things to my post. I hope you're not too discouraged from this set back. It will be worth the wait. ..........Paul"

Absolutely, Sandy, it WILL be worth the wait! I can't add any anything to Paul's excellent advice for Sandy at this point!

I want to credit Paul for getting me involved in a Velcro fastening system test! Funny how one gets fixed on something-one track mind syndrome-from past experience. I probably was never going to give Velcro another chance and I was advocating pull on diapers. And that's knowing the shortcomings: you really can't get them too wet or they sag and start sliding off you! And if you have to change them...pants, shoes have to come off.

So what exactly do we cloth wearers recommend to the disposable wearer that wants to try cloth and doesn't want any hassle. They are used to unfolding a diaper and taping it on-standing up-perid, done. So, for cloth to compete....it needs to be just as easy. Velcro holds that promise.

Since Paul was willing to step up and test one Velcro system diaper, I felt obligated to join in so that a second Velcro system diaper could be evaluated in the same time frame. It will be wonderful if both work out, then Paul and I will have two diapers / sources to recommend.

Oh, yes, in checking over Paul's post I'd like to agree with him about plastic pants "softness". Belive me, the "softness" is all over the lot from what I consider the absolute softest to really harsh, crackly vinyl that almost no one would or could wear. Years ago print plastic pants were always the "harder" vinyl, probably something to do with the printing process. But they've gotten past that and you can get print plastic pants that are as soft as the original white plastic pants.

To avoid disappointment and wasting money, best to go with someone's recommendation for source and type. I refer you to Paul's recommendations and mine are for BabyKins and a few select others.

Hang in there, Sandy! Paul is 5 washings into his test; my diaper is still two weeks away from delivery. JoeK

I just wanted to let yall know, I have deleted Loving Comfort from our links page. If they are out of business, or just giving bad service, we don't need them on our links page. :(

I was also wondering what everyone thought of Angelfluff Diaper Company?
I have ordered from them in the past and have had good service but its been a while.
They are located in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

You guys should sow your own with those pins and needles  I went to the Angle fluff site and looked at a few. I take it hook and loop is another word for velcro? I'm kinda waiting for you guys to give me the results of your tests. Or maybe I should just buy one of each from angel fluff  My husband would kill me $$$$$ He said if I wanted to spend the money on cloth he said I could but you better wear them! He wasn't to thjrilled when I told him how much. But like I pointed out I should be able to wear these for along time to come so in the long run we should save money :D

Hey Sandy!
Thanks for checking in. When I wanted to switch from disposable diapers to cloth diapers, I consulted my wife. We share finacial info with each other, and so if I'm gong to spend a lot of money for cloth diapers and plastic pants, I want her to know.
I ran the numbers on the cost of disposables compared to cloth. I was spending $400.00 a year just using disposables at night. I have to change during the night on weekends. My cloth diaper holds me all night long. The initial cost of my cloth diaper set up would probably be around $175.00 to $200.00. That's 4 diapers, 3 pairs of plastic pants, and shipping. Those 4 diapers lasted me two years. So it's a no-brainer cloth are cheaper over the long run. You do have laundry, though. I wash my own diapers every day and the peace of mind I get at night with no leaks and the comfort offset the washing for me.
Sandy, I realize you hunt for bargins on e-bay. So your savings my not be as much as mine. My wife now thinks it was a wise move going to cloth diapers. Her biggest plus she likes is the odor is gone in the morning. For some reason, cloth with plastic pants don' give off an odor like disposables do.
We're going on a vacation next week to Florida, and the condo we're renting has a washer & dryer. You bet I'm taking my cloth diapers with us. Plus, I'm not all the time taking a bag full of used disposables to the trash chute every day.
Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox and let you decide for yourself, Sandy. I'm just glad you're seriously thinking of going to cloth. Don't let me push you into this. I want you and your husband to both agree that's what you want to do! Your a good friend, Sandy! Just take your time. .....Paul

That's an interesting note that they don't smell. My husband wouldn't know if I'm there or not with out that early morning urine smell :) I suppose the plastic pants fit fairly tight on both your legs and waist so it would make sense. Have you tried the plastic pants over a disposable does that hide the smell or is it only with cloth. Then when you think about it often times the disposable will have gaps around the waist when your laying in bed especially by morning so I guess it only stands to reason. ........................Sandy

Sandy,
I always wore plastic pants over my disposables way back when. I still had the smell problem. Something about the disposable material I guess.
Just another plus I like about cloth diapers. .....Paul
