Has anyone experienced staying in the hospital while incontinent. I will be needing to be in the hospital after surgery and am both bowel and urinary incontinent. It's in my records and all that are concerned know of this. My question is how do they changed you. I won't be able to get up but I should be able to help positioning my body. Do they change you as soon as you dribble (which is constant for me) or would they wait till the next shift nurse take care of it? This will have bearing on how many diapers I'll need to bring (my doctor says the ones I use are far better). Thank you

well if they charge 20 bucks for a asburn that cost 3 cents
better bring the deed to your home all your money
the diaper must hace gold leaf on the outside so no complaning about cloth like backing

Well I would think that you just may wake up with a cath inserted. So that takes care of most of the problem

I've told them no catheters. I don't want the chance of a UTI. And I have about 3 to 4 BM's a day. So that I hope at least that will be a trigger for a diaper change.

Hospital stays are really quite simple. I have been hospitalized while incon about 10 or 11 times. I have both bladder and bowel incon as well. I have never been cath'd. You may have a catheter while they perform your surgery depending on what part of your body they are operating on. But if not, they may let you wear a diaper. I have never had surgery. I have always worn diapers and I am mobile. Since I am mobile, I have never had to be changed by a nurse. I always tend to my own needs. If I was not mobile, the nurse would do it. If you are post surgery and probably in pain, my guess is that the nursing staff will tend to your incontinence needs. They will probably change you every couple hours until you are able to do it. They will not let you sit in your feces I guarantee that. My experiencce in hospitals has always been positive. Just make sure you bring enough of your own supplies. I always bring my Abenas. It is never a problem.

My experiences in the hospital is similar to Don and I also been in the hospital many, many times.
When I had my heart cath preformed I was still using diapers. After the procedure I woke up in recovery with a chuck or under pad under me and one over top of me held together with forceps used like pins making a makeshift diaper it worked extremely well.
When I got back to my room the bed was already made with a chuck on the bed and when they transferred me the nurse did the same thing she used chucks top and bottom of me she also added a towel between my legs I was not supposed to move for six hours. After that she came in changed me into a regular disposable once I was able I did everything myself from there.
I was surprised I was not cathed when they do a heart cath they cut you in the artery in your groin.

Now my incontinence has taken a different route and I cannot go on my own I use a Foley catheter 24/7 so hospital stays are a breeze.

I had hemorrhoid surgery several months ago when I got to the hospital all my records were there. The only thing the nurse did was changed my leg bag to a night bag and hung it on the side of the bed.

If you are normal it is embarrassing but you don’t die from that and they have seen it all before anyhow so don’t worry most hospitals and there staff will do their best to keep it to a minimum.

I was in the hospital when I was a fairly young adult. For the most part it wasn't to bad except for one CNA. She was mean to me I was unable to change myself she called me lazy and asked if I was enjoying this Said I was probly spoiled as a child. But I only had her for one day the rest of the stay was fine......................Sandy

Just let the nursing staff know anytime you want to be changed. They are very professional about it as long as you have a real incon issue. They will have you lean on on side of your body while your laying in bed for the change. The nurse will give you instructions on what to do. It's easy,...takes them about 3 minutes and there finished.

Thank you for your responces. I feel better about what to expect while in the hospital. I've been diagnosed with congenital spinal stenosis and have needed diapers since birth. It sounds like they change you the same way my doctors staff nurse has changed me in his exam room.

I'd have filed a written complaint about her. No reason to treat you that way and her superior needs to know so it can be corrected.
