For those of you who have a neurogenic bladder, what symptoms did you have? I am wondering if that is what is wrong with me. I have been to the urologist like 2 yrs ago and had a complete urodynamic workup and cystoscopy. They also did a PSA, prostate exam, and urinalysis. No abnormatlities were found and they gave me no reason as to why I leak. They told me that my psychiatric medications can cause me to leak. I have been to the uro doc since then about a year ago and they did a bladder ultrasound showing I retain some urine. But no other tests were done. I am scheduled to see a Uro doc at the end of this month and I'm trying to collect some ideas. My incon has gotten worse over time and I have developed symptoms of IBS with occasional bowel incontinence due to frequent diarrhea. As far as urine incontinence goes, I only get a small urge before I start to leak. Most of the time, it is when I am standing. I do leak sitting and while I'm walking. I also have some occasional leakage when clearing my throat or coughing. I also sleep wet quite often. Like 2-3 x a week. I have symptoms of OAB as I wet like 8-12 x a day. I go through about 4-5 diapers in a day.

I have had blood test ruling out diabetes and I have also had a CT scan of my abdomen. I do not have anything in there that shouldn't be there.

Don, I've been diagnosed with neurogenic a bladder of sorts. Mine is due to damaged nerves. I have very little bladder control, if any. I too went through all the urology tests although the doctors were pretty certain that it was my injuries that caused my bladder problems. The tests more or less confirmed to the medical community that I was not able to control my bladder function. I also went through a barrage of neurology tests. These were not just for my bladder but also parts of my lower body which were permanently numbed or deadened because of the nerve damage. I just don't feel the urge to pee. My bladder pretty much releases whenever a small amount of urine builds up. In a way this is a blessing as I never seem to experience any "floods". I can still end up pretty soaked after 8 hours of sleeping or some days when I am not able to change as often as I should. Hoping everything goes well at the doctor for you and that they are able to pin down why you have been leaking. Keep us informed.

Not sure if I have a neurogenic bladder, but my symptoms are similar to yours Don. I am a type II Diabetic with diagnosed peripheral neuropathy. I've been going to the Urologist lately and he has found several interesting things. In the cystoscopy, he said my sphincter was abnormal and opened way too easily. He also said the walls of my bladder are very thick, suggesting OAB, even though I don't experience any urges. In a CT scan, he found an anomaly that looks like a bladder stone. He asked me if I've passed any stones since my CT scan, I said no. I retain urine, but when I'm full, my urine stream seems to be normal. I told him that most times when I pee, it is very weak stream that lasts for a long time. My incon seems to come and go, but it seems to be more frequent than before. I also have some bowel incon too. The urologist says I'm way low on the Bell Curve. He hasn't found any solutions yet but prescribed Detrol LA, which is awful and not at all effective. I lasted a few weeks before I couldn't stand it anymore. When I have incon problems, I wouldn't call it leaking. It does seem to happen more when I'm standing, suggesting that gravity is having an impact. I do frequently wake up wet making wearing night time diapers more of a necessity lately. I hate diapers and I try to ween myself off as soon as I think I've reestablished control. Sometimes I misread things and I end up having an accident. I know I should get over the diaper thing, but I do like continence when possible. I guess this probably doesn't help much other than letting you know that you are not alone.

Dan,

It does take some time to get past the mental road block that diapers are bad. It's beat into us at an early age. Kids that grow up with incontinence tend to be shunned the worst. My Urologist said it best when she told me "There are much worse things that could happen than incontinence." At first I thought she was just trying to make me feel better about needing to wear diapers. After talking with a couple of fellow veterans I quickly learned that I was much more fortunate than they are. I can still lead a "normal life", whatever than means. I only require a bit more planning now.

I think this is what I have. I have incontinence due to neurological issues anyhow.

I retain urine but so far intermittent catheterisation hasn't helped. If I can hold on until I'm full I'm more likely to be able to go completely but still often have problems (particularly as I sometimes empty before I'm full).

What's odd is that if I go to the toilet but don't empty completely eventually my bladder empties in a way that feels similar to vomiting. After that happens once it can be really weak and keep emptying of it's own accord afterwards. When the vomit like thing happens, I lose a LOT of urine. I've been wearing daipers that are supposed to hold well over 2L and they've still leaked in the first wetting. I know that they don't actually hold that much in practical terms but even if you take a third of that it's quite a big wetting!

I had a urodynamics done. The results of which can be found in the medical tests section. I talked to my doctor last time I saw him before my test and he was asking if I had ever been in an accident. I have only been in two car accidents in my life. One was pretty major and one was minor. But they were when I was a teenager. I'm 28 now. Surely if I had a problem it would have shown up long before this. Also, I was knocked unconscious in Marine Corps boot camp in 2003. I was put on light duty for a week. I was never told I had a concussion. I do remember getting real strong urges to pee after my training accident. But I always made it to the bathroom. I never leaked on myself until around 2008. I have bedwetting, urge incon, and fecal incon. For the bladder and bowel, its like urge incon out both ends. I don't know what to tell the doc, I've really never been in an accident. Outside of being knocked out a few times in my life, nothing has really ever happened to me.

I talked to my uro doc. I don't have neurogenic bladder. I do have overactive bladder and urge incontinence. I knew this though but it did get confirmed in the urodynamics. Thats what I was looking for. Last time I had a urodynamics when I first became incontinent, nothing happened and nothing showed up on the test. I felt like a fool. This time my urge incontinence was confirmed. The doctor put me on Sanctura. I'm going to give it a shot. If it doesn't work he recommends either botox or the interstim implant. I don't think I'm up for either of these. With the botox, I have to go into the O.R. like every 3-6 months for injections through my urethra into my bladder. And botox is a poison. I'm just not willing to do this. Also, with the interstim implant, they have to put leads into my sacral nerve in my tailbone (i think). I have heard horror stories on this thing. I am not really willing to try surgery. I am going to try the Sanctura, but if it doesn't work, I'm no worse off than I am right now.
