Non-secure website?

Mon Apr 08, 2019 2:15 pm

I just noticed “Not Secure” for this website.
Can anyone tell me what that means for my privacy?
I post here with the high expectations of privacy.

It means that everything you type, including your password, is transmitted in plain text, which means you shouldn't use the same password you use for anything sensitive, such as when buying online with a credit card.

Same as what humanfly said. In theory someone could intercept the transmission, and since it's not encrypted, they could read it. This is a forum on the open internet though, so everything you're typing is already available for anyone to read. Unless your using the same username and password here as you are for banking, or other secure communications, it's not really a problem.

The bigger issue is for places like online stores or services, where people are entering credit card information. You absolutely don't want that information transmitted over an unsecured connection.

It also means that I need to do another update that i'm scared to do. The last time I did an update, I broke the website

Seriously, i've been going through a lot for a while, and i'm sorry that I have not done the updates as needed.
Like MSUSpartan said, we have nothing to hide here. We have never sold anything and all they can steal is whats freely available here anyway. Everyone here is anonymous and I don't think many people here actually use their real name anyway.
But I will try to get the forum updated sometime soon.

I think the only problem is, that this side doesn’t redirect to 443 (https) automatically. So if someone like to have a SSL encryption he can simply type in “https://“ instead of of “http://“. The link can of cause bookmarked - so that it’t easier to recall it later.

But just to take out a bit of the illusion of “savety”: Yes - SSL is side to side encryption - but if you think it can’t be cheated your wrong. I saw meanwhile a lot of installation where company's replace the side certificate with there own ones on there IPS/Proxy. This looks then still like a save side, because the certificate is a company ones and it is registered with your browser, but your boss can read every think if he like. So it’s every time a good idea to check the certificate of a side - even if it “green” - just to make sure it comes from the side an not from something in-between...

As others have stated, you have almost all the real work done already, Schoppy.
If we all just change our personal bookmarks for this site to use "https://" instead of "http://" all will be good.
