Something to think about bulk

Thu Dec 10, 2015 5:35 pm

I have worn a combination of cloth and disposables for many years.
I have made one experience that may be important to share.
The bulk has proved to pressure my hip joint outwards. Over the years this has worn down a part of my hip joint.
As it is now, I am in no pain when I wear ony light disposables, but if I try a heavier combination,
I will have pain after a few hours. The location of the pain in my hip joint is concistent with the type of pressure caused by bulk.
Luckily, my incontinence is now sporadic, so I can get away with lighter protection...

Hope this will be useful information....l

optimist,

This is indeed troubling news. I have been told that my bouts of sciatica were caused by spinal problems which were in turn caused by Marfan syndrome, a genetic disease. If that is not so, if wearing heavy diapers can cause hip joint deterioration, I am in trouble, and so are many other folks here. But thanks for the heads-up, even if it is disturbing.

One of my aunts has marfans syndrome. If I understand it right, the connective tissue is weaker and more flexible.
This means that you might be more vulnerable to the extra strain, as the ligaments struggle more to keep the hip in place.
It is not fun to end up with such dilemmaes...

I assume the problem with bulky diapers is the weight. If so onsies that support the weight might solve the problem.

Optimist,

I will second Vandel's recommendation to wear a onesie. As I wear my overnight cloth diaper for a fairly long period, averaging about 11 hours, some form of support is essential to carry the weight and keep the diaper close to the body.

Some trial and error may be required to find the correct size. :( The critical measurement is your trunk length. If that is too long, the onesie will not provide adequate support to the diaper; if too short, it just won't fit. There seems to be considerable variation between manufacturers, so, once you find one that fits, stay with it.

One of the main reasons I wear a diaper cover over the disposable is not only for added protection against any potential leaks they may develop (very rare, but it does happen), but also to slim down any bulk, and keep the diaper from sagging. Additionally, I think there is another feature of wearing the diaper cover that is often overlooked and that is odor protection especially in the summer months, and for those that are bowel incon. Just a simple diaper cover goes a long way in the reduction of odor. I like to wear the onesie (body shirt as I like to call it), during the fall, and winter months. These are the only months that I wear a T-shirt as an added layer of clothing, so many times instead of wearing the T-shirt, I'll wear one of my "body shirts" over the diaper cover.

Just my thoughts.

I would assume the problem with try he bulk is ... the bulk (ie. the width) of the padding between your legs keeping your hips splayed. The cowboy walk, not the weight, is what would cause pressure points in the joint.

That is what I tried to say. It is the sideways pressure that caused my damage.
