Welcome aboard, Cheryl......as a Parent myself I can't even imagine dealing with a severely disabled child. So good for you for taking on a tough and often thankless chore. He is lucky to have you watching out for him and it looks like you're doing a good thing by trying to be informed on the best way to take care of your son. I do not have a ton of information to add because I'm not a heavy wetter, I am more of a light leaker. The folks on this forum are truly experts in the field of adult incontinence. Everybody here has "on-the-job training" you are doing the right thing by trying out samples of different products. That is the way that you are going to find the right fit for your needs.

What is your son's hip measurement? That will make a big difference in the options. If he is still pretty small there are a few companies that still make good youth diapers. If he is a little too big for those or near the limit he may be better to use a small. Also, some companies have different ideas about what a size should represent. Medium is like a Small to some companies. Other companies it's closer to a Large.

If we know the actual measurements we can help you find some options as a team. There is a wealth of knowledge and resources on this forum just waiting to be accessed. You have a good start with the members that have already responded.

Example:
If I know your son has a 26" waist I won't bother recommending companies that don't produce a good diaper that properly fits a 26" waist.

Did you request a sample of the Youth size Preimum Taped Briefs from Secure Person care?

http://www.securepersonalcare.com/briefs-premium-taped-briefs-c-1_4.html

For a daytime product they are actually pretty good. You can add a booster pad to double or triple the capacity for night use. That might be a good option until you find a better product.

Let us help you as much as we can. In the end it will make your task easier.

Cheers,

Doug

Hi Doug,

Any help would be most appreciated. I double checked David's measurements and they're as follows: waist/hip both 27 inches, thigh at crotch =13.5 inches, so call it 14 or 2 inches bigger than I thought.

Yes, I did order the 2-pack of the youth brief you mentioned but I'm not terribly hopeful since they describe them as moderately absorbant, or something to that effect. I know I can stuff them with pads but in my experience that tends to exacerbate the leg opening gaps and if his stuff is pointed the wrong way he just pees right out the leg opening. But we'll see when they get here.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Cheryl,

Molicare Super Plus is a diaper that would work great for your son's measurements and your criteria.

http://xpmedical.com/molicare.html

They offer a small the he would fit very well. The Super Plus is a very good product for the size and absorbancy. If you have not tried them yet they should be on your short list.

Cheers,

Doug

Hi All,

I just wanted to stop by and give you an update on my son David and our diaper dilemma. I've started receiving some of the samples I ordered and last night and today I tried the Tena and Molicare Super Plus, and they both leaked with each sample I tried. The Tena had the usual big leg openings, and although the Molicare diapers leg gathers were a little more snug, they just weren't absorbent enough when he flooded them. I tried them both during the day and night and neither seemed better during one time or the other.

So, I'm still waiting for more samples to come, including some youth sizes I'm very hopeful about, but in the meantime I got a surprise from a friend who is very big on cloth diapering (kids) and she found online what she thinks is the solution to our problems. She bought me some flat adult cloth diapers and taught me a fold that puts an insane amount of layers between his legs, along with 3 adult size waterproof diaper wraps and plastic pants. And I'm thrilled to report that since Thursday afternoon last week, when David has been in the cloth diapers he has only leaked a few times, and each time it was due to my not pinning them snug enough, not getting the fold quite right, or not getting them tucked into the wrap completely.

The one drawback of the cloth diapers for me is the pinning. I'm not very good at it and it scares the heck out of me using sharp, pointy things with David. But, if none of the samples end up working out I think I can learn to live with it. Ironically I thought the folding would be the issue but I got that pretty quick. My friend showed me a couple of different folds the first day but after I found the one worked I just kept using that one. So accept for last night when we tried the sample disposables David has slept through the night 4 out of 5 nights, and the one night had nothing to do with his diapers. Which means, I got to sleep through the night for the first time in months and that's pure gold!

Thank you to everyone and your great advice and support. I'll keep checking in to give you the results of trying all the samples I get.

Bye for now,
Cheryl

I have hear from a few here that there are ways to secure a cloth diaper without using pins. Hopefully one the the cloth diaper users on this forum will let you know what they found best.

Glad you found something that works.

Doug

Hi Cheryl,
I have found Snappi's work very well. Their own web site is http://snappibaby.com/products/snappi-diaper-fastener, but they can be found on Amazon too. Use the larger size of the two, and they will stretch enough to do what is required. They are quick and easy to use. Cloth diapering is a learning process, as you are finding out.

Cheryl, All diapering is a learning curve. Since your son is not active cloth diapers will work very well for you. You can layer them easily and prevent almost all leaks. The plastic pants can be bought in colors or prints which may catch his eye and make changing him easier. You still have to find a good disposable for the times you take him out. But with cloth diapers you will also never run out of diapers or need to keep ordering them, you will be a wash away from a full supply. Keep experimenting and as with anything, practice and time will reward you with what you seek. Papa

REALLY? Because I saw the Snappis and asked my friend about them and she didn't think they would stretch enough for David. But you are actually using them? Anything special about how you apply them, or do you do it just the way they show in the video? This could be perfect.

Thanks so much,
Cheryl

I also recommend the NorthShore house brand. I sit at a desk all day for work, which means the back of the leg bands is the first place I will get leaks. The NorthShore is the best I have tried for wicking all moisture throughout the padding, even up the back, before developing leaks. It also stays feeling dry, again one of the best I've tried. They make small, extra small, and youth sizes. Contact their customer service and they will send samples.
