Hi everyone! I am new to the forum. I am in my early 30's and have been urinary incon 24/7 since a traumatic brain injury 15 years ago. My acceptance of this problem fluctuates. I have been having a rough time with it lately. I am a very active person with a career in teaching. Besides a afo Brace on my leg my disability is mostly not visible. I work hard to keep it that way. Most of the time I can deal with diapers in a very matter of fact way without to much emotion attached to it. At other times I get very angry about it. At the moment I am trying to get rid of a bad rash. to deal with fatigue from the TBI I have to sleep 10-12 hours a night. The only diaper I have found to hold that long is abena m4, but unlike the tranquility pullups I use during the day, the abenas don't seem to protect the skin as well. I ignored the rash a bit to long and now it's really bad and painful. I finally am taking it serious and using products to treat it....but all these products have a "baby" smell to them. I hate that smell and it makes me feel very bad about my problem. Are there any products out there for skin protection and diaper rash relief that don't have that baby powder smell to them? I know I am the only one who can smell it on me, but it just triggers a lot of negative feelings every time I have to smell it!

Thanks guys...looking forward to participating on this board!

Welcome to the forum. There are some very good products that you can use that don't have any scent to them and are very effective in treating, and preventing diaper rash.

I am incon from a spinal cord injury, and like you,... I'm am also mobile and led a active life style. The VA covers all of my medical needs to include meds, diapers, hospital bed, etc. One of the products I receive from the VA is a cream called "Soothe & Cool". I don't know what's in this stuff, but it works really good on rashes, and preventing rashes. I think it can be purchased over the counter (online), so you might want to buy some. It really does work well with no greasy feeling, or scent. Another good product is made by 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film. I know this is available over the counter, (online), but it is very expensive and is a spray that provides a protection barrier to your skin. I think the cream works just as good but in a differet way at a fraction of the price compared to the 3M Barrier Film. Another item I would recommend would be the use of a special powder,...you would need a script to obtain it, but the name of it is Nystain Topical power. The power comes in a very small plastic bottle containing 15 grams. A little bit goes a long way so you don't need a lot to cover the surface of the diaper, and/or your diaper skin area. One last product that you might want to try is A&D, This item can be purchased in a number of stores. I think Walmart has one of the lowest prices on this item if you want to try it as well. Those are the best products that have work for me when it comes to "unscented" skin protection.

Let me know if you have any issues with incon odor. I have some suggestions in that area as well, but the items I use are nothing new that has not already been mentioned before. Hope this helps.

Hey Flagrl1225!

John gave you a bunch of good suggestions. And by the way, welcome to the forum as John mentioned. I think you can find something that would work like from Wal-Mart. Most of these creams will alow you to unscrew the cap and you can smell it. I personally use creamy desitin and it doesn't have much of a smell at all. You may look at that one. Good luck! ....Paul Martin

Welcome Flagrl. Papa's advice to use cloth for sleeping is right on the money. By far the best for absorbing and keeping leaks to a minimum. After using disposables at night for a few years I made the switch to cloth and I have no problem making it all night. It took some getting used to at first but I soon learned how much better cloth is for sleeping. Especially for a side sleeper like me.

When I get a rash I use A&D Ointment which has a menthol smell to it. It doesn't smell babyish what-so-ever. It is the best rash ointment I know of. I don't use it daily but should I have the beginnings of a rash I clean the area and apply A&D and most of the time the rash is gone within 24 hours. I seldom get rashes. When I do it is usually after I've been wearing disposables for an extended period. I can't say that I never get rashes wearing cloth but very. very seldom.

Welcome to the forum, as far as odors with creams go, I use the Equate brand that Walmart sells, not really much smell to that one, and not at all like the stronger baby brands, A&D is another good one. I can relate to the battle mentally with being in a diaper at an age where not many would think them necessary, but then again, those folks don't have plumbing issues to contend with. The barrier film I also use, more for external catheter skin prep then rash prevention, but no baby like odor to that one, the wipes are cheaper then the spray as well. Good luck, Puffy

Thanks guys that is a lot of good advice. I looked at some cloth diapers on amazon. Im thinking about trying the all in one By leak master.mcloth would defiantly save money in the long run! My only concern is with laundry. I would have to wash at least one every morning if not more if I need a change in the middle of the night. How do you deal with keeping them clean?

I would recommend the Kins All in one over the Leakmaster, from what I have read, they are not all that good at mastering leaks, lol... http://www.babykins.com/store/adult-cloth-diapers/ They are a bit on the big side to wear, but unless you are worried about being in a fashion show, then no big deal. I add a few layers to them, to add coverage, and that works well for me to get through the night to morning on even my worst nights, but still use a bed pad for the hip drip!. After a year, they have held up well, no rips, I rinse them out in the shower in the mornng, and wash with the other laundry, but no bleach or fabric softener, cuts back on absorbancy so I read. There is more of an odor issue to contend with in the morning, but nothing too terrible. Paid for themselves in the first 4 months of use, I am glad I switched for night time use, Puffy

There are many pros and cons about using cloth diapers. I use cloth at night all the time, and sometimes during the day for extended wear. I've purchased cloth diapers from all the leading manufactures, and like disposables, it all comes down to personal preference. Most of the items sold at Fetware are also available from BabyKins, but Fetware does offer many of their own items and if you live in the USA shipping is a little less if your purchase from Fetware. I purchased all of my cloth diapers from Fetware and would recommend them very highly. You might find disposable by day, and cloth by night works the best. It does for me since I sleep on my side a lot. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.
