and then only in the late summer. This year is gonna be a HOT one

Now that the summer heat is getting here, what is everyones tricks and tips on beating the heat?

What ways is everyone planning on staying cool this summer?

Hey, Schoppy, what a great time to bring up an appropriate thread! The heat is record breaking in many areas and has been on the news daily..... esp the mid Atlantic that has power outages lasting for days so people don't have air conditioning to help with the temps up over 100......

I am thinking of three topics relating to beating the heat.

One is diaper rash, more prevalent with heat....and that is currently being discussed. And that's good since new products get mentioned and for those who aren't getting results with the old stand bys they have new things to try.

A second is plastic pants and cloth diaper wearers, like myself. While I like vinyl plastic pants most of the time, summer heat is one time I favor the coated fabric waterproof pants. Moisture weeps thru the pores of the pants and that bit of evaporative cooling can make for greater comfort. The disposable counterpart would be the cloth backed breathable diapers and I know it's certainly debatable just how breathable they are, I have heard good things about Abena's air plus so that's something for disposable wearers to try out in the heat.

A third topic is water sports; beaches and pools and the problem we have dealing with diapers and not wanting the world to know. There has been discussion in the past and tips and methods brought up for dealing with diapers in and around the water....oh and boats!

I used to water ski a number of years back with a good friend (who had the boat and place on a lake) who since has passed away. He and others involved in our water skiing never knew I wore diapers. I successfully used my dogs for "cover" and we went out in the boat specifically to ski....when I was in the boat I was sitting on a big thick towel that soaked up the lake water and any urine that happened to flow out. Because we were all skiing, we were all wet.....and at the end of the session, I "had" to get back to shore to tend to my dogs....which got me out of the boat before we could dry off.....after which a wetting accident would be pretty visible. Naturally I took my big towel with me. No one ever commented on the fact I used a beach size towel while everyone else has a normal size towel.....it was not worthy of mention but it did the trick for me. If we were going to continue boating, I would rejoin the group after "tending to my dogs" which I did....giving them a short walk....but the main thing was getting back into a diaper so I could rejoin the boating group, properly protected!

I hope others will chime in with their tips and tricks for dealing with diapers and the water.

Oh, and I do think by now everyone realizes a "swim diaper" is for fecal incon and does nothing to contain urine. And on the same note, peeing in the pool is very common; incon or not, and pool chemicals have no problem keeping the pool water "safe". And everyone knows that you should never ingest pool water....it's not that safe!

Stay wet....stay cool

Hi everyone!

I thought this summer heat thread would "heat up" but here it is, August 22nd and summer is flying by....and I do mean flying! I just can't understand where the time goes!

Here's hoping all of you are staying cool, one way or the other, while contending with maintaining social continence by wearing diapers under your shorts!

I have been paddling on placid lakes to beat the heat in a kayak. It is so calming to glide across the water. And it is personal watercraft, so diapers are no problem. Shorts over a disposable diaper work just fine and you get your lap wet anyway from the water dripping off the paddle, so wet shorts are the norm with this activity.... how convenient....<grin>. If changing to dry clothes is necessary, as in you are proceeding with someone to a restaurant for a meal, then minimal privacy should allow for a change into a pull on diaper and dry shorts and shirt and off you go.

I already mentioned in the first post the benefit of the cooler nylon waterproof pants and now I have discovered PUL pants and want to mention that Gary, the big manufacturer of plastic pants for decades, has gotten into PUL pants that are designed primarily to wear over disposable diapers for that extra protection we often need. They are called Gary Active Briefs to emphasize they are for us "active" people on the go and needing and wanting an extra layer of protection.

I am bringing them up here since many choose to wear plastic pants over a disposable diaper but in the awful heat will frequently skip the plastic pants....just too uncomfortable....and risk a leak with the disruption and embarrassment that usually comes along with that dreaded diaper leak! The cut of the Gary Active Brief is closer fitting than PUL pants that are now available for wear over a cloth diaper. I have some of them and they are too bulky to wear over a disposable diaper whereas the Gary Active Brief is just right, with comfortable PUL protection and very little added material to provide that peace of mind!

Stay cool and enjoy the dwindling summer as Labor Day is just 12 days away now!

The excessive heat this summer has been a challenge. My home and place of business are air conditioned but I still spend plenty of time each day out in the heat. I've always been one that perspires heavily which means that when it is hot I pee less because I'm sweating more. When it is really hot (over 90 degrees) I usually wear lighter protection such as a pull-up at work. Normally I cannot get by all day with a pull-up but when it is this hot I can get by with lighter protection. Heat rashes and chaffing seem to rear their ugly heads when it gets hot. I make a special effort to keep my diaper area extra clean to combat the rash thing. I'll take 2 showers a day when it gets really hot and I've been in the heat. To beat the chaffing I'll use a little extra powder which works quite well. If I get a heat or diaper rash I'll change more often and keep it clean. When it is hot and I'm wearing cloth during the day I'll use snap-on plastic pants which help somewhat to circulate air. When it gets really hot I can't wait to get home and go "comando" for a half hour or so. This is something I usually do daily but it is even more important in coping with the heat.

I also battle the heat when doing the lawn chores and have stuck with cloth diapers for this activity. When away from home for extended periods, I end up in disposable diapers with a Huggies Overnites soaker diaper. Baby powder on the leg does help with sweating but there isn't an easy fix with the heat. I would much rather shovel snow than to mow the yard any day. For recreational activity I tend to stick with cloth diapers and bring a change of clothing. I found that cloth diapers work well if hanging out at the pool. You can eventually go in the water and not have them swell up like disposable do. I also found that the vinyl plastic pants don't hold gallons of water the way swim diapers do when exiting the pool.
