If you are a vet and currently receiving health care from the VA, the purchase of incon items can be provided by the VA at no cost to you. The VA will buy all your incon supplies as long as you have a doctors prescription for the these items. However, the VA does NOT like to buy items outside of thier supply chain so approval of "quality" items not carried within their normal supply chain is a little more difficult as it requires the VA to make a special purchase of those items which is known as a "non-formulary" purchase. This means the VA goes out of the supply chain and buy the exact item you want from a vender (it's best that you provide this info so they know where they can purchase the item(s) you want.

The purchase of cloth diapers is not easy unless your local VA has purchased these items before. Anytime your dealing with the VA regarding the purchase of a non-formulary product it may not be an easy task and approval may take time.

I can't stress how important it is to have your VA doc, or better yet,..... a VA Urologist provide you with a script for the exact brand, size, and quantity you will need for a month supply if you want disposables such as Abena, Molicare, etc. The same holds true for cloth daipers,...... having the script is foremost to everything you do if you want the VA to purchase these items for you.

I can offer some advise to any vet if your having problems obtaining "quality" products from your local VA. Let me know if you need help.

Johnstone and all,

I have the VA purchase non-formulary diapers every month. I am service connected for incontinence and the VA here in N. Florida provides me with FREE Abena Xplus and Extra every month. I get 12 batches a year, one refill per month. I didn't see a VA urologist for this either. I went through my primary care doc at the local clinic. My doc actually knew nothing about making a non-formulary purchase for diapers. He originally wrote me a script for wings/depend brand. I had to complain to the patient advocate for about 6 months about the quality of the diapers I was receiving. I told them it was affecting my quality of life, which it was because they leaked all the time as we all know. So eventually my doc's PA-C had me call the Head of Pharmacy. I wrote her a letter describing what exactly I wanted and why. I asked for Abena products from XPmedical. My PA-C wrote the script for them and they were placed on order. The rest is history and I have been receiving them for 2 years. I call the Head of Pharmacy every month to place an order and they send them to my house. But I am service connected so this was a little easier for me.

I also get them to reimburse me for Suprima plastic pants. I order the pants and my HofPharm. sends me a check.

I also get body suits/concealers from Easy Access Clothing. These are purchased by the Head of Prosthetics. I supplied the vendor information and did all the leg work. THey make the purchase. Its that easy. If you know the VA system, its actually not that bad.
