I live in the UK where, so far as I have been able to find out, there are none of the above to buy despite the obvious use of them in the USA. Over here we tend to be left with terry towelling squares which are rather bulky.

Does anyone know of an outlet for the US style diaper in the UK or do they have to be imported from Canada or the USA?

Yes! Well, let's qualify this a little bit. I don't have sensation in the lower body so as to notice so I can't really say yes too honestly but it causes no skin damage which I check each day.

As for absorbency, we are down to the same method as pre-folds. Enough cloth and everything is fine. It is a matter of having the right size for one's waist and then adding extra inside. Folding is done like http://www.drylife.co.uk/ab_page.php] this. I use a 48" square and fold a 36" one into three as a soaker and it holds ... well, quite a lot.

I use a sheath (external catheter) sometimes and that airs the skin. I had almost 2 ltr in the bag after last night and I think my nappy would have held most of that,

The real benefit of this style of nappy is, though, washing and drying. It is only one layer thick when unfolded so dries easily just like a towel whereas I imagine a multi-layer structure would take much longer.

I tried prefold diapers too. I bought the big flannel ones I think. I got frustrated with them because I couldn't do the pins. My wife had to help me do the pins. I don't like anyone putting a diaper on me. That is more of a personal act and I was very embarassed. Even though it was my wife. Just like I said in my other post, "changing in the hospital", I am nervous when it comes to having a nurse change me in the hospital. I don't want anyone else to have to care for me like that.

Don, with these sorts of problems I think you have to leave your dignity outside the hospital and just get on. Due to MS and various other infections I have been in hospital a few times and bathed cathetered and had sheaths put on by nurses, nearly all female, at various times. My present urologist is female!

Next week I have to go along for cystoscopy - flexible tube to inspect the inside of the bladder. In the room there will be the urologist, female, and usually 3 nurses, female. I will be covered with a big green sheet with a hole in it exposing my genitals and nurse will clean the 'end' and the urologist will hold on to it whilst putting the cystoscope in.

A nappy change is a private affair behind a curtain and nothing as much fun as I will have next week, so Don, just drop your dignity next to the hospital door before you go in and you will be fine..

Wheels is right. I leave my dignity at home when I'm heading to a doctor appointment. It has made the last couple of appointments much easier and less stressful.

Wheels,

I used to order prefold diapers and my better half has made me a few but I have pretty much switched to using flats and layering them. I found that prefold diapers do not survive nearly as long as the flats do. The prefolds tend to get beat-up in the washer and dryer which definately shortens their life span. I think much of the damage occurs in the dryer as the thicker prefolds take considerably longer to dry that do flat fold diapers. Flat fold diapers dry quickly and never seem to wear out. It takes a few minutes for me to put together a layered flat-fold diaper but I don't mind. I go through 4 to 5 diapers on average each day. It takes me about 45 min every week to fold the diapers up that I will need that week. I've got it down to an art. I can get just the right thickness for my specific needs. The flat folds last and last and once they are worn in the corners I use them as soakers doubled over inside the flat fold diapers. I have gauze, birdseye and flannel flat fold diapers. I love the convenience of prefolds but the cost for them as well as the short life of them outweighed the convenience.

I only recently switched over for night to cloth, I ordered some of the AIO from two sources, they work but need extra help for sure. I am with DDS on the layering and also the laundering of flats vs. AIO, the flats although a bit of a pain to fold launder much better/faster, and give better coverage as well. I have been doing the trial and error thing with using both at the same time, I am finding out that really works well, and I don't have to limit fluids knowing any night wetting incidents are thoroughly covered. I have not tried only using the flats with a coverpant by themselves yet, that is the next level, and will have to fiddle with the layers to see what works the best. How many layers do most of us on here that use flats put in, just l;ooking for an average user? I figure 3-4 in the center and 2 all around should be adequate for an average night, although all of us have different output as well. It is far more comfortable for sleeping in then a disposable for me, but the bulkiness takes some getting used to.

PS wheels... good luck with the scope you have next week, hope all goes well for you, I have had several and they are not the most pleasant for sure... Puffy

Though I have not used pre-folds, I can quite see how they would get more wear in the drier as they would take much longer to dry.

Where do you get your flat diapers, Puffy? I was interested to see the shape and style as it might be something my wife could make as we only get terry cloth here and it is quite bulky.

not at all, actually, I am numb more or less below the waist so no problems! Thanks for your good wishes though!
