Hi, I am new here and am a male. I recently have started to suffer from incontinence. I'm only eighteen and have gone to the doctor and I was diagnosed with urge incontinence. I need advice on what protection to use. My accidents range from just enough urine to wet my underpants, to enough to noticeably wet my pants and embarrass me. This has happened before in public. I really need something to manage this, but it must also be discreet as I am at school. My school requires uniforms, so it will be nearly impossible to hide a diaper. I would really appreciate as many answers as possible, its really embarassing:( Thanx

So you are 18. I guess that makes you a rising senior? You have my sympathy. If you are a senior, does that mean you won't have to take PE this year? If you don't have to dress out, that will avoid a host of problems. You are going to need to have your doctor work with your school to make accommodations for your urge incontinence. It will also mean that you must not drink anything with caffeine during the day. Maybe someone here can advise you on high capacity disposable pads or an external catheter and leg bag, but as I understand them, their use pretty much precludes being able to use a toilet. If you use a disposable product, you are going to have to carry a spare along with white, not clear plastic bags for disposing of used ones. The prescription drugs that can help with this might work for you, but they can have many side effects, some quite unpleasant. I can almost assure you that your peers are going to discover your situation whether or not you are using and changing pads at school so you need to have a plan worked out with the school administration for dealing with the original problem and any negative attention that comes your way.
Best wishes.

Confused teen,
You need to go see a doctor if you have not already done so. That is so important as your incontinence maybe curable. This is not a life that you want to live. Living a life wearing diapers is not something I would have chosen for myself. It is not easy. So go see your doctor, this may be curable. It could be something as simple as a UTI. Bottom line, incontinence doesn't just come out of nowhere without a reason. There has to be something to it. Don't just resort to diapers. If you need them until you can see your doc, then by all means, do so. But don't just wear diapers without seeing your doc. Seeing your doc is very important.

Welcome to our forum!

I totally agree with the excellent advice already posted for you! Incon is not to be "just accepted" unless and until there is no hope....then a diaper offers a way to get on with your life.

Please peruse a sucess story here with Sociology Geek. Well worth the time to go back thru his posts on this forum.....especially when he was near the end of his rope and about to embrace diapers as the only way to get on with his life.

I still understand you don't want to be embarassed with wet pants. Urge incon requires you to wear something "just in case" you can't make it to the bathroom. I would think a good pull on would work well, would not be noticeable under your school uniform and give you peace of mind protection. But get a good pull on....by going on line. The "underwear" found crowding the incontinent isle in pharmacies are generally pretty bad and can leak with a single wetting accident.

Check out www.xpmedical.com for their "underwear" products. Even try a sample pack if available to see what will work for you while disappearing under your pants. They allow the best access for using a toilet when you can, along with dependable absorbancy / protection for when you can't make it.

Hey everyone...I just want to say thanx for all the advice. I did go see the doctor, as mentioned in my original post. I am on a bladder retraining programme and include frequent stops to the bathroom. I have purchased a bag of tena pants and will see how they do in the up and coming week. I am a little hesitant to purchase the abena pull ups as I am afraid they may be too bulky. I'll keep you posted on how it is going. Thanx again

Hello confusedteen, did your doc refer you to see a Urologist who can do further testing to see if they can find a cause? That may be the next step if you don't get any resolution with the retraining. I use the Tena for men underwear/pull-up during the day, and when I need them they work better then the Depend ones, just more money is the drawback. I too run a set bathroom schedule at work, go if I need to or not to avoid the inevitable, works 99% of the time but need something just in case, as you never know. I do find them bulkier in the rear, but a looser pant covers that. I hope you find a reason for it all, not something I would wish upon anyone! Puffy

Hey...I just want to say thank you to everyone. You have really made me feel welcome, and this is the first forum where I was welcomed and given great advice. I am a new sufferer to incontinence, and I really felt alone, but not anymore. I plan to see if my condition gets better, and if not I will go to a urologist. For now, I just have to live with wearing protection. I had a small accident today, but luckily the tena pants kept me dry and unembarrassed. The one thing I want to ask is, has anyone ever noticed if you're wearing protection are not? I am constantly worried that one of my friends will notice. Am I just being to paranoid? Thanx again for all the help

No generally people do not notice as long as your clothing is conservative. Just wear pants or shorts that are one size too big and loose in the seat. Its not that hard. I've never had anyone notice and I've worn an Abena Xplus with pair of suit pants and a shirt and tie. Noone suspected a thing. I have never been questioned. Its generally pretty easy.

You really need to go see a urologist. They maybe able to help you get to the bottom of your incon issues. Don't just wait around to see if it gets better. Life with incontinence is not fun. And it may get worse for you, not better.
