Hey, was doing a bit of searching on special needs to kill time, and i come across this: http://www.vacuumdrydiaper.com/.

Now this is an interesting idea.. A vacuum connects to a diaper to drain the urine out of the diaper when it gets wet.. thereby allowing for repeat wetting without compromising pad absorbency or skin integrity.

I for one would like to see this technology patented and brought to fruition.

Of course ,the immediate question that comes to mind is: How is the diaper connected to the vacuum? is it built in, or is it necessary to cut a hole in a diaper to put the vacuum in? from what i gather, the design will be implemented such the diaper will have the tube built in.

Now, i know this sounds weird..but if you think about it..it could have real potential. It combines the best advantages of diaper and cathing. The advantages of diapers over cathing is that there is nothing inserted or attached to the body itself in anyway, thereby eliminating or reducing the chance of UTI, while at the same time, doing away with the wet environment that wearing a diaper would entail, thus utilizing the dry skin advantage of a catheter or urinal.

Thats fantastic but Im not sold on a metal disk being in and around my sensative areas. But a move forward in technology for sure and yes im sure this will develop into something in the future.

about the ammonia build up from the urine that is removed. There is no way they'll be able to extract the ammonia and severe diaper rash will result.

well i am not gone on the idea of a vacum device in my crotch area either! I can picture the idea of a 'vacum diaper' the days of people 'not' noticing a person in a diaper would be gone.
it sounds like an idea for an imobile person..

Mike
hang on i just need to set the vacum going.

I don't quite see the need for this device in the first place. For most people, urine flow fine into a nappy (sorry daper in N America!) and the whole can be more leak proof by applying plastic pants around the whole thing. However....

If you have rather more rapid flow than can be absorbed by an oridinary diaper or you want to be able to last longer between changes a versatile arrangement is already there - the sheath (sorry external catheter in N America) and leg / bed bag. A light non-latex sheath adheres to the penis and drains into a bag strapped to the leg. No vacuums needed and, for interest, where does one house the large springing drainage container - in a sock?

If diapers are not working, try going to your local Cololast site (not advertising - there are lots of makes by Coloplast is the only one that easily gives samples away to try!) to see what else is available and avoid nappy rash too!

Wheels,
Personally i think that either this device / contraption was a 'hoax' or it is someone trying to invent a device for something that has already been sorted out.

seems to be the way the last few years, everything has been invented (very little of the invented stuff is actually useful mind!) so they are trying to invent a device for the sake of saying 'hey im an inventor'!

Quite right, Mike, it does seem that way. I don't think we have much problem with the devices we have today although they are improving.

The article says that you need to change it 4 times a day compared to 12 times a day with a regular diaper. 12 times?????? I don't use that many in 4 days!

A vacuum diaper? Sounds like the futuristic clothing from the "Back to the Future" movie that dries while you are wearing them. Who knows? If you would have tried to tell me 30 years ago that we'd have the technology that we have now I would never had believed it. All technology has gone nanotech. One would still need to find a restroom to empty the diaper. This sounds much like a condom cath system but with the diaper being the holding device. If they could come up with a better external cath system then there would be no need for a vacuum diaper.

I agree that there would be no way for the vaccuum device to eliminate the annomia build up, so it would develop odor build up no matter what, and draining the fluids out would mean the device would have to be taken with you, unless you did it at home only. As for external catheters, they have come a long way in the last decade, the silicone types are a much better secure application that is good with no leak issues for a min. 24 hours, :) compared to the latex ones I used before from Hollister, lucky to get 12 hours out of one of those kind, Puffy
