Here shortly I will be going in for femoral impingement and hip labrum surgery. I have always been quite independent and especially when it comes to my incontinence however, talking with my Dr I am going to be less mobile can anyone give me advice on taking care of incontinence after a surgery. Any advice could help.

Hi Itjustleaks: Sorry for the late reply. I hope this isn't too late. I've had hip replacement surgeries while managing incontinence so I have a bit of experience.

I'd have a frank discussion with the surgeon who I assume knows about your continence issues. First thing is will you even be allowed to use diapers to manage your IC. It depends on where your wound site will be. In my case, the use of diapers was a no-go because they needed to keep the wound site dry while I healed. So it was a foley catheter for me! If the wetness/dampness is not an issue for you, then how mobile will you be? Will you be able to manipulate your diapers in your usual putting on position? If you put them on while standing, will that still be possible while you are healing? Or if laying down, can you move around given where you will be at during your healing phase?

Do you have some one at home that might be able to help during the first few days? Pain meds might make you loopy and you may not attend to your needs in a timely fashion?

Lastly, if your doc doesn't seem to have all the answers for you, then maybe seek the advice of an Occupational Therapist or Continence Nurse/Therapist. Either one should be qualified with letting you know how to manage your needs while you get back to normal.

Blessings to you,

ILuvLA

Thank you.

My surgery will be arthroscopic labrum and hip impingement repair.

Talking with ortho they will make three incisions on the out side of my hip however that is not my wory.

I will be non weight bearing on my leg for 4 to 6 weeks. With limited movement of the hip.
I will also be out of it for a little bit due to Anastasia and the pain meds.

I have always taken care of my problems and I am a bit of a control freak.

Once again I thank you for the advice.
