Hi All:

As anyone who has used Comco knows, these pants are cut very large so that tension on the side seams should never be a problem. Ruling out any tension on the side seams, has anyone had a problem with the seams parting after normal use ? I have had this happen in several pair where the parting is exactly on the seam and is not a new tear in the material. The pants were only hand washed and line dried inside so sun and heat is not the problem. It would appear that the welded seams are not strongly welded enough. I wrote to Comco several times, but never got a reply. Is my experience unique, or has anyone else had the same problem ???

Hi Tonto,
I've worn Comco on and off for many years and never experienced the problem you described. I hope others will post experiences with Comco seams, whether good or bad, as you have asked. But even if most were to post they never had a problem, that does NOT, in my humble opinion excuse Comco from ignoring you.

Comco, like many business' may have staffing problems and are hard pressed to stay on top on customer inquiries. If I were in your shoes, I'd pack up one pair of the failed pants and ship them to Comco with a letter indicating the approximate age, point out the care you give to the pants....which is much better than the care I provide!....and express your concern that this could be a manufacturing defect that they would want to know about! ie you are doing them a favor to point it out.

My thinking here is that if they have a pair of pants under their noses, they can look at the failed welded seam and say, "Yep, looks like the seam welder was messing up when these pants went thru!" I offer this suggestion as someone who has been in manufacturing all my career and when someone has a problem with my product, I'd like to see it myself.

Thanks JoeK:

Unfortunately I disposed of them in disgust over the problem. Your suggestion is very well taken, and I'll do that if future problems develope with other companies. It will be instructive to see if others respond with this welded seam problem. At the present time, however, I am most hesitant to trust Comco with another purchase.

B. :)

If you like the Comco pant, it is somewhat unique for both the heavy weight vinyl and the cushion style waist band. I can't think of any competing pants. Adult Cloth Diaper and Time For A Change offer the same pants but I believe they are made by Comco for them so that's no help.

Gary pants, sold by more sources than I could list, do not offer a vinyl that heavy nor do they offer the cushion waist band. But before writing Gary off completely, you could talk to Lonnie at Plastic-Pants.com since he can talk directly to Gary and see what they might be able to offer you and at what cost.

Best bet, in my opinion, would be to try Suprima (B4NS-on our links page) where you can get the heavier vinyl like the Comco. Suprima's standard weight pants are like most plastic pants, about 3 mils thick. Suprima has a midweight vinyl that is 5 mils and that is their "Yellow Xtra" pants. And their heavy pants are like Comco's vinyl, 7 mils thick. You won't get the cushion waist band of Comco, but if you get the S1212 you will get wide bands, the waist band is a full 1" wide and that might provide adequate comfort for you similar to the Comco.

Be sure to check our Primer Addemdum on Suprima and peruse the B4NS site for more information. If you've never tried Suprima, I predict you will love them and be won over by German excellence in manufacturing.

Please keep us informed!

While I like Comco's pants, my problem with them is not that the seams have come undone, but that the vinyl gets hard and cracks because of contact with the mineral spirits in Desitin and other ointments and lotions used to prevent or deal with rash. Polyurethane is a much longer-lasting material. I wish Comco would produce and sell a urethane pant using their cut and elastics, which are superior. Carl

I gave up on Comco a long time ago for several reasons. They are cut wrong; the leg openings are to the side not the front, and they are not tall enough to cover the top of my diapers. Also the elastic wicks so fast that I could hardly tell if I had plastic pants on at all.
So much for my complaints.
Out of desperation, after Lang went out of business, I found a company called Fetwear (I know, but forget about the name) that makes what I consider the perfect plastic pant. It's a No Wick style that is cut properly to fit over even the thickest diapers and they last forever. The only complaint I have is the plastic they use stains easily. (No big deal since I can count on one hand the number of people who have ever seen me in a diaper.)

Hi Rog909,

I've got to jump in and clarify the Fetwear reference. There is Fetwear and Fetware. Both with the www and the dot com, ofcourse.

fetWEAR is the fettish site, of little or no interest to incons looking for waterproof underwear.

fetWARE is an incon site and yeah, they cater to the AB DL fetish but they offer a lot of stuff, including the good, No-Wick pants you referenced.

Now for my two cents, I think they are a little high priced. Some of that, IMO, stems from a feeling that the fetish folks will not look as hard at what they need to spend to enjoy their hobby, while we tend to be more pragmatic and want more for our dollar.

For my hard earned dollars, I will go with Gary pants....Plastic-Pants offers a huge array and yes, he also caters to the AB/DL folks with print pants and frills and colors but....he's got a huge variety of plain utilitarian plastic pants. The elastics are not wrapped with vinyl but instead the elastic is wrapped around the plastic edge, to provide a bare essence of cushioning, and which can wick but rarely will, especially if your change your diapers before they are soaked-which we should be doing, anyway! And if you must extend the wear time on a diaper and know it is going to reach the soaked state, then wicking at legs and waist can be stopped simply by tucking the elastic bands down into the diaper at the waist and up into the diaper at the legs.

Any of the Gary pants are cut very well to allow pleanty of room over bulky cloth diapers and all have great crotch width, so necessary to allow the tucking of the leg bands I am talking about.

An added bonus, the pants can be had in polyurethane (aka urethane) plastic which is totally unaffected by the oils in rash creams and skin emolients.

Now, Rog, you were a customer of, was it Fred? of Edley Enterprises in New Hampshire.....I've great memories of many years dealing with him and the real Lang pants. But, still, I will say I was happy to find Gary pants which offered the first really wide crotch for cloth diaper wear. But up until Gary came along, Fred used to say his Lang cut design offered the widest crotch in the market....which was true. I had plastic pants at that time with a 6" crotch in size large. My Kleinert pants had a 3" crotch. That was pathetic. When Gary came out with about a 12" crotch in a large pant, that was finally a pair of plastic pants made for cloth diapers! ahhhh, a bit of flashing back to what were NOT the "good old days"!

Happy St Pats day from this Irishman!

Well, much has happened in the three years since this thread started, with Babykins introducing heavy gauge plastic pants.

I did like the heavy weight vinyl that only Comco had but I never liked the cut of the Comco pants. They fit me rather poorly, compared to most other plastic pants.

Better cut plastic pants can be had from Babykins in the heavy weight vinyl. Lycra leg and waist bands make for a very comfortable pair of plastic pants.

If you really liked the wide cushioned waist band that was unique to Comco you can find it in a Babykins product now.

If you like the no-wick design, again, Babykins now offers wrapped elastics which, for me, are perfect for overnight wear....no wet spots on the sheets at all.

And no, I don't work for Babykins....I just happen to like their plastic pants.

And for dealing with rash creams, you do need to keep it away from vinyl plastic pants and choose fabric pants that have been waterproofed with polyurethane....with very nice ones being offered by Changing Times Diaper Co.
