Post subject:  New adult bedwetting

Hi Fellow Sufferers,
I am in my 30’s with a high stress professional life. The last thing that I need is dealing with new bedwetting. I dealt with bedwetting as a kid until I was in grade school and it was never a problem until now.
This has happened several times over the past several months. Initially I thought it was due to alcohol from the holiday parties or sleep deprivation from the air travel and late nights. First it was at home and I got worried after the first couple of times. I got more worried when it happened when I was flying on a redeye flight (Thank goodness I wore just-in case protection) After a string of these events, I saw my primary care doctor who couldn’t find a problem and referred me to a uro-gyn specialist. She ran some tests and everything was normal. Thats worse than finding a problem. So these doctors are telling me that they can’t find the problem which means there is no good solution. The specialist recommends trying desmopressin. I am undecided about this.
I wear diapers whenever I can possibly fall asleep (nighttime, air travel). This treats the symptom. However, it does not treat the underlying problem because I am told that I have no problem that they can treat. Are any of you in the same quandry? It is frustrating. How have you coped with this?

Thanks for listening to me.
Kim

Welcome to the forum Kimknits23. Maybe ask the doctor if the test can be ran over night. It could be some type of sleep disorder causing it if it is only occurring during sleep.

Hi kimknits23:
It's possible that stress is the cause, has anything changed in your high stress job?

Also one question... Obviously you are not waking up when you bedwet but are you having a dream that you are actually peeing? I was just curious since I've had a random bedwetting issue (1-8 times per month) for quite a few years and in my case I always have a dream that I'm trying to find a restroom. When I do find one I use it "normally" (in my dream) and in the morning I find my protection soaked. Unfortunately I almost never wake-up having to urinate and therefore must wear heavy protection every night.

I have done the tests during the day (urodynamics, urinalysis, etc.) Not sure if doing them while I am sleeping is possible because they retire my cooperation.
My job is demanding and the levels of stress go up and down but that has not changed much recently. Maybe its my body's response as I get older. I don't know.
I don't have the dreams that you mention.
I am not embarassed about wearing diapers to bed or on the plane. I can accept that wearing diapers is a treatment for a problem.
However, I am frustrated about the unpredictability of the problem. I am dry for several nights in a row and then I wake up wet.

Hi, Kim, and welcome to the forum. As you may know, stress is a known trigger for people with a history of childhood bedwetting to begin to wet the bed in adulthood. You mentioned that you have a demanding job and that job stress is not new for you, but have other stress factors recently come into your life, i.e., a new job, relocation to an unfamiliar city, buying a home, marriage/divorce, becoming a parent, loss of a close family member or friend, etc.? Any one of those factors, or a combination thereof, could have caused you to revert to bedwetting.

I'm glad that you chose to have a medical workup to rule out any underlying illness. Hopefully the primary care and/or specialty exams included lab work as well. I'm happy to hear that your doctors didn't find a medical concern.

You appear to have a well-adjusted attitude about wearing diapers - you're miles ahead of most people, and it seems like you're managing your sleepwetting well. I would continue to wear protection nightly for a couple of months and re-evaluate the status of your wet nights. I would pass on the urine-suppressing meds. I'm sorry that bedwetting has reared its head. I hope your wetting stops soon and I wish you all the best.

W.

The idea of suppressing urine production seems logical but it hasn't worked so far.
This is my experience.I have tried limiting water intake in the evening. My experience is that I will still wakeup with a wet diaper. Maybe its not as wet as it otherwise would be if I drank more at night. There is no difference between a diaper that is very wet vs wet. It is still wet and I would have a wet bed if I didn't wear it.
I am still decided about the desmopressin. Have you had a negative experience with it in the past to recommend against it?

I had a bad experience with Desmopressin when I was younger after the doctor up my dosage. It made me not care about anything and I was mad all the time. I ended up in a fight with my younger brother and punched the tail gate of my dads truck and later when I was being stopped from leaving I put my other fist through a window in our house. That is when I gave up on taking drugs. For years I did not know what I was given by my recent hospital stay the hospital pulled all of my records from past stays.

One of the side effects is listed as abnormal thinking... and that is what it did to me so just a heads up. I would say take some time off work if you're thinking of trying it, getting fired over a drug would suck worse than having to wear a diaper would.
