I recently had to start wearing diapers because of 2 strokes and then some medicine mix up that ended up causing nerve damage that my doctor doesn't believe is fixable. This happened through the VA I went in with my wife having a stroke. They wouldn't let me into the emergency room directly because I came in a POV instead of an ambulance. Then the doctor I had then wanted to prove I wasn't drunk or faking for "extra benefits" and I nearly died. Now I have these issues. The va diapers don't work well enough for me and leak. I am now on a fixed income and money is really tight as the fixed income is less than what I used to make. Where can I find diapers that work...the va pharmacist says they have a formulary they have to work from and cannot go outside of that. Anyone with ideas?

Welcome, Kevweck. My first thought is to ask if you have conferred with an attorney. What you describe sounds like egregious malpractice. You may be entitled to compensation for what you have suffered. Unfortunately, premium incontinence products can be very expensive. Several forum members have prevailed in seeking assistance from VA. You might have a look around the archives.

welcome Kevweck. I was able to get non formula diapers from the VA. Had to go through a lot of formula ones first. Do you know which ones work for you?

Just sent you a PM. From what I was told in the past and what I did to get them. If you can get your PCM to write a script for the ones that work for you; the pharmacy has to get them. Grant it there will have to be some justification on it and that is where you come in explaining why you need that particular type.

Also, I forget who provided this link to me, but it is items the VA can get without much hassle. I just wished the descriptions was a little better on the items.

Kevweck,

Welcome. There are many folks here who understand your predicament. Money is tight for many of us. As you come to understand how best to manage your situation, the issue of washables/disposables comes into focus. If you can convince the VA to go outside their formulary to allow you to purchase adequate protection, wonderful. However, you may discover that washables, although they entail a steep upfront expense, can be much cheaper long-term, and, for those of us who use them, more comfortable, more absorbent, and offer more reliable protection.

Good luck, and keep us informed.
