Post subject: | Help with a medical treatment decision |
Hi Folks, While I encourage folks at Brew's Yahoo Adult Incon Group to join here and folks here to join there, I will very rarely "carry" a post from one site over to the other, but this is a significant concern that should get the widest exposure possible to folks who have had either proceedure done and can comment on the pros and cons they found after the proceedures. John is a new member at Brew's Adult Incon Group and has urine retention problems, which we all know is serious and must be dealt with. Two options have been presented; inserting a stint to hold the passage open OR surgically disabling the sphincter muscle with precise cuts. With Schoppy's permission I am pasting his post here: ******************* Sorry I have'nt had much time to sit and write to the group much since joining but I have been looking at the posts from time to time. When I first joined the group I posted a bit about myself and my situation from a motorcycle accident. I have been seeing my doctor alot lately doing all kinds of tests to figure out the best solution for my neurogenic bladder. When I first started seeing the doc for the issue other then being incontinent for many years we discussed perhaps doing a stent proceedure to fix the issue but he wanted to run tests first to try and figure out what was happening. Well with all the tests complete he says he would rather do a External Urethral Sphincterotomy because stents are uncomfortable and this proceedure would be better suited for me and I would'nt have a "forein object" inside my body that could later down the road cause me a great deal of problems. I have seriously considered the proceedure but am worried about the pain if any.....what life will be like after the proceedure. 1 - Has anyone here in this group had a External Urethral Sphincterotomy? 2 - If so, what was the recovery time after it was done? 3 - Has anyone had a Stent placement proceedure done? 4 - If so, what was the recovery time after it was done? 5 - I know that in both cases my bladder will be wide open all the time, but I am curious.....do you just constently dribble or do you ever have small voids? Please help me make this very important decision, I don't know which proceedure to have done but ultimately one or the other must be done and soon. I will be making my final follow up appointment with my doctor on Monday and during this follow up I need to have an answer of what I want to do. Please Help....... John ******************** So, folks here at the ISC, if anyone can contribute two cents (or more) of advice, please post it here or e-mail me: guinessman02129@yahoo.com Joe Kelly |

Hi John! I'm a modirator on this site and also a member of the yahoo group. You really have a tough question here. I see my urologist on an annual basis, but I'm nowhere near what you have to decide. It sounds permanent what the doctor wants to do. That would scare me too. If I were in your shoes, I would seek a second oipinion. You may not have that choice or may not want to go through this again with another doctor. Surely, some of our members know someone who has faced this. Anybody out there who can help, John? ......Paul Martin |

Hi John I sure hope you get the answers that you need. I agree with Paul, have you seen a second urologist? Schoppy |
