Our Sunday paper supplement included an advertisement from the physical therapy department of one of our local hospitals; specifically, it advertised their pelvic floor therapists. It included the statistics that 33% of females and 25% of males will need pelvic floor physical therapy sometime during the course of their lives. Those are impressive numbers, even if you discount the self-serving nature of that advertisement. As long as humans stand upright, they will be vulnerable to events which pinch and irritate the nerves to their pelvic floors; no wonder big businesses salivate at the prospect of the profits they can make serving this market.

I am receiving pelvic floor therapy for my second time around. The first time, more than two years ago, I saw substantial improvement and it helped me to better understand my incontinence and my limits. :D This time not so much. It is possible that I will finish this therapy with no visible improvement despite the significant cost (paid by insurance). :(

I have had three cycles of pelvic floor physical therapy. After I surmounted the initial embarrassment, it wasn't too bad. Although it did not cure my incontinence, the therapist did much to guide me through the process of dealing with my paralyzed GI system, which was extremely useful, and more than any doctor did.
