Post subject:  Leaving Friday for my 2nd trip to Europe

My wife is staying home to take care of her elderly mother so this is a Dad and daughter (age 17) trip to France and Luxembourg. It would be too humiliating to have my nighttime protection with me so I'm intending to do as I did on my last trip in December. I'll have an alarm clock and will wake myself around 1:30 a.m. each night which worked the last time. Sometimes falling back asleep after getting up is hard which is why I don't use the alarm clock at home.

As a side note, things have been going pretty good for me. I cut back a little on my pygeum (3 pills/day instead of 4). I have rare but occasional dribbling but nothing too serious and I don't have to reorder pygeum too soon. I've been careful in limiting caffeine and especially alcohol which has been a driver of accidents in the past. No caffeine after 2:00 p.m. and I try to have no wine after 6:30-7:00. Many nights I don't wear protection but for example I recently ate close to 1/3 watermelon at a grad party so i wore protection that night and also wear if I've forgotten the pygeum or if I'm sleeping on the couch. Been about 2 months since any accidents.

Everything sounds good, BUT......I would prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I would suggest that you wear at least a pull-up during your trip just in case you need some protection. Having some kind of protection makes sense to me. Hope you don't need it but what if?

I hope you have a fantastic holiday with your daughter one to look back on. I don't know if your are driving or going by train in France best to keep a media watch on all the industrial action going on there at the moment so you are both prepared for any disruption? When I jet off I have a supply delivered to the hotel or self-catering place awaiting for me on arrival to save space when packing for the trip. I take a small supply in my carry on bag just in case of emergencies such a flight diversion/delay or lost hold bag.

Take care and have a super time.

I hope you and your daughter have a fantastic trip! :D

However, travel can be upsetting - new food, new environment, new schedule. These can adversely influence our continence. To be safe, you might take some good pull-ups and plastic pants to wear only at night, just in case. Also a few disposable absorbent bed pads. You do not want to soak the mattress in a hotel in a foreign country.

Have a fantastic trip, G. I second JD in his comments about travel (i.e., a night in an unfamiliar bed after a long day of traveling, a change in one's dietary routine, and attempting to navigate through an unfamiliar environment), and also his advice about pull-ups and bed pads. I would pack pull-ups to use like regular underwear for daytime, and sleep in them as well, and disposable bed pads are convenient for protecting the mattress. Even if you share a room with your daughter, you can be just as discreet with pull-ups as you would be with regular underwear. Also, you had mentioned in another thread a while back that your daughter knows you sometimes have wet nights. I'm guessing that it wouldn't surprise and/or upset her if she happens to see a bed pad.

Please don't risk setting an alarm - even if it works, you won't be at your best for enjoying your trip. Eat, drink, and do whatever, whenever and wherever you want to, and rely on protection for keeping the bed dry.

Here's how everything went as far as incontinence issues:

The first 2-3 nights were ok but then I had a couple nights where I had to get up 3-4 times before even falling asleep because I was not able to empty the bladder fully. I was afraid of wetting hotel beds so my resolve cracked and and I bought Attends Flex (like Tena flex) in the Netherlands. Expensive (28 euro) and crappy. They were incredibly loose around the buttocks even though they were the right size and had i really soaked it while sleeping the bed would have been drenched. they were incredibly uncomfortable too. That is all I could find in the Netherlands at multiple pharmacies.

After 3-4 days of worrying (even though my night bladder had calmed down), I found a package of 30 small tena slip plus for 21 euro in Antwerp Belgium. They are a little tight on the legs but were still comfortable. Much better! Unfortunately I had to toss 8 or so for lack of room in my luggage. I wore nightly thereafter plus one morning when I had dribbling. If I dribble it is usually in the a.m.

My 17 yr old daughter was with me on the trip so she now knows all the details of my issues. I feared she would reject me as weak or something but she didn't. She still loves and accepts me.
