Sometimes I really hate being a grammar nazi.

I personally find your above posting to be not operate for this forum. Maybe you would be happier some place else.

I don't believe in criticizing other people for doing the best they can to communicate. Maybe there are medical reason (mental conditions) interfering with their thought process.
For those same reasons, many people are incontinent. Some people lack thought before making their post.

Hope this helps.

I know this feeling only too well. I feel bad that my skin crawls when I read poor English. And I shouldn't because I have ADHD and dyslexia - contrary to popular belief, being dyslexic doesn't affect everyone in this way, which will be one of the reasons mine went undetected till I was 26.

I should be more understanding really, but I can't help but think of a few people I have met who just say "I'm shit at spelling" and seem to not care at all. On one hand it could be argued that there are bigger problems in life to worry about than poor grammar but on the other hand, if they only knew how off-putting this can be to the likes of potential employers, let alone being frowned upon in social media.

I work on international technical standards for a living, where grammar is foremost. In my off time, I choose to mellow out about it. I actually stress more about where I can find a good rum.

Oh Johnstone, you're funny. It was a general post not pointed at anyone. Just a general frustration I have everywhere I go. My mother was an English teacher and I was brought up with grammar as a major part of my life. I honestly cannot understand how some people in the company I work for get promoted to better positions with such poor grammar. But, whatever. I deal with it. Facebook is the worst for me. I can hardly get through my feed anymore. But like I said, just a general frustration I have in life.

Tom: I agree about the rum or any spirit or wine for that matter. Although I have learned that lately I need to abstain from alcohol consumption. The last time I had a small glass of wine, I woke the next morning with the worst headache I have ever had. Kind of sucks really.

msshendo, I'm a grammar geek/slave, too - I've been one since childhood. An apostrophe in a plural when it's not possessive, the use of "till" in place of "'til", the use of "its" in place of "it's", the misuse of "affect" and "effect", etc. sends me over the edge! I do try to be a bit more informal, though, i.e., "Who the bell tolls for", as opposed to "For whom the bell tolls", etc. when I'm addressing people in a more casual venue.

Wetters, Thanks. I read things, especially on Facebook, and I sometimes have to read it again to understand what the poster was intending to say. Sometimes the wrong word can cause a whole differnt meaning. As far as I know though, I have never publicly corrected anyone. I try not to do that as I feel that would be more of an insult to them.

msshendo - you're a writer, and I'm a writer wannabe. I think grammatical usage is an Achilles' Heel for writers; definitely a hyper-sensitivity there, but hey, someone needs to preserve the standard. IMHO, we've slacked off way too much over the years in the areas of grammar, manners, ethics, etc.

I can truly relate to your statement that you sometimes need to read posts multiple times to understand them, and the fact that the posters don't punctuate properly (or at all) certainly doesn't help! Keep fighting the good fight!!

I agree with all of you about poor punctuation! :(

With regard to grammar, what about "if" versus "whether?" As in, "I do not know whether you are incontinent, but, if you are, you should wear diapers." :D

Yeah, I know, the current generation does not sense the difference.
