Howdy yall

About 1 week ago a bad storm came through my area and at first I was doing ok, I had power and my sump pumps was keeping up with the water.
Well then it happened, the power went out. My nephew and I got my generator started and got the pumps running again. I thought GREAT I can take a little nap.
After about a 2 1/2 - 3 hour nap I went to the basement to check things out as the generator had stopped running. I got to the base of my stairs and found WATER EVERYWHERE.
I had about 4" of water in my entire basement and everything on the floor was SOAKED.

I had just restocked my medical and diaper supplies and had them sitting on the floor (along with the other stuff that FILLED my basement, im a packrat hehe)

Well we got the generator restarted and got the pumps running again. Then the big question: what all got damaged.

Did you know that when a case of diapers soak up a lot of water that they weigh a TON? :lol: :lol: :lol:
I can only imagine how much water that a few cases of diapers can hold.

Then the big cleanup started and boy was it a big mess down there. I cant begin to tell yall how much stuff got damaged or ruined.
This weekend we are starting to get things back together again. We got the carpets dry and I dont think the walls got too bad. I do have some mold/mildew that I have to get cleaned up before it gets bad. I did buy a bunch of plastic totes to store things in and keep them dry.

All-in-all I think I lost about $15,000 - $20,000 worth of stuff and medical supplies :cry: :cry: :cry:

It has NOT been a fun week. :( :( :(


At the end of this month my nephew is taking me to an Indycar race in Ohio and some of the supplies was for that trip.
I just hope the weather is good while we are gone. Im not sure what I would do if we came home and find the basement full of water again.

Schoppy, I'm sorry about the flooding. Hopefully your homeowners insurance will cover cleaning, and replacement of your household goods. I guess we never think about flooding a diaper that way!

I can only imaging how much they weighed. Hopefully, insurance will cover everything. On the bright side, at least you are not swimming.

I feel so sorry for you such a trauma hope the insurance is settled swiftly. You are in my thoughts.

A neighbour had a similar issue and it is worth having the walls looked at as they had to have new plaster. In the UK people who had homes on the levels in a county called Somerset were drying out for a year a BBC TV show documented the battles with insurance you are not alone. Hope you have the dehumidifier's working to continue to dry things out. Don't forget the dry rice trick for smaller items.

schoppy,

Losing a large inventory of disposable diapers to a flood must be difficult. I hope that your recovery will be swift and successful. Selfishly, we need you here, without any of the illnesses contaminated floodwater can cause, your wisdom and house intact.

That is terrible! :( As I too tend to hoard some diapers and supplies, I can sympathize.)

Good luck with your cleanup and I hope that it is covered by your insurance.

Standard homeowners insurance won't cover something like that, unless you have a rider for equipment failure that covers you because of a faulty generator.

Ironically, flood insurance probably wouldn't cover it either, as that kicks in only when you have a river or lake overflow.

Schoppy, I am sorry to hear that too. I fear that Spartan is correct too. It all depends on your insurance policy. When our basement flooded due to rain it was not covered and we lost a good bit of stuff. We had just moved in earlier in the year and had the basement finished for an extra room. We lost that extra room when it flooded because the sump pump didn't kick on until I went down and kicked it. Then all the water drained. We were so upset. But live and learn. Now we no longer have that house and live in an apartment on the 3rd floor. So, no flooding for us.

Hope your getting along alright..........I think we're all hoarding diapers when we get good deals on them........I like to be a couple cases ahead on my preferred brands......
