Here are my observations (thanks to Padded53 for the format):

Plastic-backed:
Pro: Good leak protection, variety of absorption levels, ease of changing without removing outer clothing and shoes.
Con: Noisy, retain heat, expensive, tapes quality varies by brand and lot, sometimes difficult to get tight without tapes tearing
Note: I am not aware of any plastic backed pull-ups

Cloth-like:
Pro: Easy to get tight without tearing tapes off, generally comfortable, cooler in warm weather and quiet, less expensive than plastic
backed diapers
Con: They tend to sag quicker when wet, I feel wetter in cloth-like diapers than plastic backed diapers or most pull-ups, weeping and damp outer layer, I don't feel as confident wearing cloth-like diapers in public settings

Disposable Pull-ups:
Pro: Inexpensive compared to other options, less bulky to wear, widely available in retail stores, compact size for travel,
Con: Difficult to change in restrooms and bathrooms-require disrobing, limited capacity for most versions, poor fit due to sizing ranges being wide, higher capacity versions are uncomfortable and sag badly,

Tab-style Brief:
Pro: Easy of changing without disrobing, wider range of sizes, absorption levels and backing options (plastic or cloth-like)
Con: Expensive compared to Pull-ups, often not available in retail stores

When are Pull-ups best used:
Pull-ups are a good option for those who don't need a high capacity garment and/or those situations where changing frequently is an option, situations where I want a more discrete option

When are Tab-style Briefs best used:
I use tab-style briefs for times when I anticipate needing to change in public, longer trips, times when I feel the protection outweighs my desire for discretion. It is unfortunate that tab-style briefs have almost disappeared from retail store shelves.

cloth back diapers suck in general tried several brands and every last one of them leaked around the wings area also note tried different sizes also and no change leaks leaks and more leaks


as for tab style vs pull ups tabs are best for every use there are so many to choose from for how much one goes and if you need to change while out tab diaper is hands down more easy than a pull up in these darn stalls in the bath rooms these days this is my thoughts on the 2 questions i seen i had the most on

When plastic backed were the norm, they weren't that expensive. They are now because they're a specialist product.

I remember when I first saw the Boots brief over here after it had gone "cloth feel" - I assumed you were supposed to wear one of their plastic pants (they do a horrible crinkly PVC pant) over it.

This discussion so far has been limited to protection for urinary incontinence issues. However, some of us here must also manage bowel incontinence. I look forward to evaluations of diapers that include tests of the effectiveness (or lack thereof) for bowel releases.

This is an interesting question and an interesting input. My feeling is, that - if it comes to diapers and pad's nothing is more polarising then the the question "plastic" or "cotton feel". I do not like to ask the question "why" here - but to be honest - I do only partly understand this discussion. When my UIC problems began I get some of these plastic bags from my supplier and I hate them. I had spend a couple of time in trying a lot different products and my experience is that nether the functionality nor the capacity have anything to do with the with the outer foil of the product. I saw "plastic style" diapers with micro leaks that let me end up with wet pants as well as "cotton Style" Products. The "plastic style" diapers I get from my supplier leaked with the first wetting. So to be honest - I do not believe in the mentioned categories.

Even the question about the wright supplier is often some how misleading. All major brands I know have good and poor products. So the question might be more: What is a good product for myself?

To answer this question just for myself:

1) the product shall have the highes discretion possible
2) It should not fail
3) It should be suitable to wear
4) it should support the way I handle my UIC problems (In my case - they shall be ease to remove if I make it to the toilet in time)

This has led me to a combination from pad's and belt style diapers. In fact all of them are "cotton feel" because I do not sweat that much in it and they are pretty discreet. I'm sure there are manny of us with other need - but seeing the latest call up's in the net putting pressure on manufacturers to reinvent these "plastic bags" made me a feel a bit frightened. It was a hard fight from the national incontinence associations at last in Germany to make good products available to all insured people. This is still a hard fight, because there are still many products on the market that have a pretty outdated absorption core design that doesn't deserver the name diaper. It's disgraceful that this crinkling bulky shit is still sold and given to people who have enough to do with they're own health problems and often do not have the knowledge or time to fight against this system.

So it might be interesting to have a survey like this - but my feeling towards the manufacturer is: Please come up with better products. There are a million already known ways to improve incontinence products but just for one simple reason - money - the old production lines are still running and stressing users with the outdated poor products.

I mean - just a thought...: Would you buy a 10 years old mobile phone or comuter design? Probably not - so why you you are excepting a 10 or 15 year old diaper design? If you asking for "plastic" or "cotton feel" you are going to make a product manager happy because you do not ask for better product - the old machines can do both - plastic and cotton feel.

I do not think that "plastic" or "cotton feel" are the categories that help to rate incontinence products. My feeling is that we better ask for realistic testing methods. Just look to the test from Real World IC - He is testing in standing and laying. This is 100% improvement to the standard ABL test that are done in the industry. These test are just performed laying - male/female adoption is possible not mandatory. Test while sitting are not mandatory for now - what do you think why? Sorry for ranting here, but sometimes I have the feeling that these discussions may have also a different background.
