I tried the pull on style way-back-when and didn't have much success. The main reason was that as the diaper got soaked, it weighed down and severely sagged; the elastic waistband could not keep the diaper in place. Yes, the cover-pant kept it on me, but I was not comfortable with an inner-sagging diaper. Thus, I would recommend cloth's that are held up by pins or snappi's (my favorite).
The only other thing I can add is to "try & experiment". It may take several trials and errors before you find the right combination of supplier, material, and thickness that best suits your needs. Furthermore, you can probably endure more thickness at night than during the day. This may affect how you wear diapers during the day verses at night. I find I have to wear differently during the day because of not wanting to be weighed down by bulk. So be ready to adjust accordingly.
Good luck!
