I often wonder how prisons cope with inmates who wet the bed regularly or suffer from incontinence. Has anyone any experience of this.

No I have not and I hope never to have to experience it. Having to deal with Incon on my own is hard enough without the pressures of being in prison too. I can't imagine.

I think I saw this topic discussed on a different forum. Maybe from Depends.

My guess would be meds, regardless of the side effects, and if the wetting persists, disposable diapers. I'm thinking that prisoners get an initial medical exam and interview upon arrival so that the administrators/guards get a heads-up right away as to someone's special needs. Maybe once in a while someone tries to use a wet bed or a mid-day need for a clean diaper as a distraction. I would think incontinence/bedwetting would be difficult to conceal from other prisoners.

Interesting question. I know something about this, so I can explain how it works, but here in Spain. Each country has it´s own prison system as justice, public health, etc. so I don´t expect it´s too similar to the US or others, but anyway I´ll do and if it´s useful or interesting to someone, I´ll be more than satisfied.

First of all, I´ll say that what I´m gonna say I know it for my own experience. I´m finishing now Law in the university but three years ago I spent 35 days in jail for a f...ing burocratic mistake of a court here in Valencia. I´ll recocgnise with no shame that all was because many years ago I abused of drugs and I had a conditional that was the origin of all, but I´m rehab since 2007 and know I´m working with my lawyer (i am not yet) to be paid the amount of 13.000€ for the consequences. Hope you appreciate that I´m honest, as I don´t like to hide my disability or incontinence neither my past.

So, when I entered and passed for the medical exam and explained everything they said that there was no problem they´ll supply the diapers needed for day and night (in fact, the diapers were the lindor of procter Gamble I commented in a recent post) and the doctor told that I had not to be ashamed because in every nodule of the prison there were people needing diapers, Anyway I was sent to the nursery one so it was almost normal and there were a few persons more that used them. During those terrible days (terrible for being there unfairly, believe me that it is awful) I didn´t hear any kind of joke or laugh about my diapers,, even when everybody knew because they gave it in the medication time and in front of anyone else, so I realised once again that adults are not like kids and don´t bother or ridiculise anyone for such disability as incontinence.

That´ s my experience and what happens here in Spain, I hope anyone prejudges me for being honest, everyona can change and rehab and that´s why now I study Laws for in the future helping peolple with the same problems I had. And also expect I´ve cleared some of your doubts about persons in that situation. Salutations to everybody!!

Nursery I refered to the modul of the prison for disabled people, like a penitenciary hospital. And I add that the physical ones like me are separed from the mental ones. they´re in other floor. And the 13.000€ is the quantity I´m claiming as compensation for the 35 days that I should never pass in prison. I know my english is far from perfect but expect it´s clear enough to be understood!! Thanks, and see you!

I know spanish grammatic is quite difficult for english speakers due to its verbs, that have a lot of forms (for example present has six, one for each person: I, You, He/she/it, WE, You, They) and a lot of different verbs times. But for us we have the phrasal verbs that aren´t easy neither!! Each language has it´s things. I have the luck to speak french and italian apart of english and now I´m trying with japanese, to speak many laguages helps a lot to find the right word in the correct place, but I understand what you mean anyway. Not much people has your modesty.... Thanks, I appreciate your consideration with my level 8) . Regards. Hope you´ve got a nice week! Till the next. See ya!

Im hoping to shed some light on this. I have a close friend that has worked as a corrections officer with one of the largest prisons on this side of NC here in the USA and he was very informative. I contacted him through a social media site and here are some cut and paste of that conversation. Pardon my responses. I did not want to make things to obvious. He does not know about my incontinence.

Me:(Friend), a question came up the other day about prisons and it was not till just now I remembered where you work and figured you might be able to answer. What do prisons do with prisoners that suffer from incontinence? Do they segregate them from the general population? Does the state insist on catheters or diapers for management?

Friend:We Have some inmates in general population using catheters and some in diapers. We also have inmates with colostomy bags and almost any other medical device you can think of. They would only be segregated if there was a risk of spreading disease to the rest of population or to protect them if their condition made them a target for assault by other inmates.

Me:Do they pair them together or do they share cells? Also I am assuming the state has to pay for all the supplies?

Friend:YOU do pay for the supplies. Housing depends on which facility they are at and their custody grade along with their overall health grade. As far as I know, only 1 facility in the state has double cell housing(2 inmates in 1 cell), the rest are either open dorm or single cell.

Me:Cool. That answers that. We had a call about a month ago and it got a few of is wondering how that worked. I was picturing something that didn't look very pleasant and smelled even worse. Also figured they would all be shipped off to one place for inmates with medical needs.

Friend:All facilities housing more than 400 have 24 hour medical coverage, most often a RN or LPN with a doctor available on call. There are only a couple of infirmary facilities in the state and none local to us. Inpatient care is provided by contract with hospitals in the region, (EDITED)for us, with cardiac and CVA usually going to (EDITED).

Me:Last question is do they ever have to expose their diapers, catheters or what ever in front of other inmates like in the showers or bedtime?

Friend:All inmates are required to be clothed going to and from the shower. As far as bed goes, privacy varies with the type of facility they are housed in (open dorm vs. single cell).

I hope this answers this better for everyone. Sounds like if you have to wear protection and don't have a single cell option, you would HAVE TO wear around the others. I apolagize but I could not bring myself to ask him what brand they have have to use and how often they change. I did not want to probe too much and draw questions about myself. I am not to the point where I can tell just anyone about my medical condition and what not.
