I was in Hospital for an inner ear infection which made me feel dizzy and disoriented and with my IBS diahrea had problems with continence. I was wearing pull ups fortunately and nurse came along at my request and I told her I had an accident. The nurse was marvelous and went and got someone to assist an orderly I think and they changed me and put me in a full hospital diaper with side tabs as they are easier for them to change then pull ups. While it was embarrassing being cleaned they were very supportive couldnt fault the way they did things and made me feel at ease.

It is best if you take your own diapers for any unplanned hospital stays. I think most hospitals use Wings, and for some people they may work fine, but they are not known for there absorbency.

When I have been hospitalized I have usually been so helpless that, when I have offered to care for myself, the staff have insisted on doing it for me. It is exasperating, but, if I were to fall while changing myself, I would cause them hours of paperwork. Allowing them to do it is being considerate; I can resume my independence when I get home.

Next month I have a spinal fusion scheduled. I am double incontinent. I understand that they will insert a foley catheter for the surgery and may just leave it in place afterward because of my urinary incontinence.

As I also am bowel incontinent, how do they handle a catheter plus the diaper? Isn't the catheter going to be very uncomfortable that way?

Because of my bowel incontinence, isn't there a high risk of getting a UTI? My surgeon said that he is going to have me do a colon prep before the surgery, so that may delay the bowel issues for a day. However, as I am very prone to impaction, he also is going to have me on high doses of Miralax, plus enemas - seeking to balance my severe constipation.

JD,

May 2014 promises to be one memorable month for you. The staff are aware that Foleys can cause infections, and I'm sure they'll help you manage your bowel routine with that in mind. Enemas are bad enough when I must give them to myself; having hospital staff do it is far worse. Good luck and keep us informed.

Thanks for the reassurance Patrick! "Memorable" may indeed be the adjective to apply to next month.

Hi,

in may 2012 I was 28 days in hospital with a pneumonia with double pneumotorax (both lungs connected to a draining box) so the first 20 days until the doctors took me the boxes out I was in bed. Here in the hospital (public hospital of the public assurance, here we have a very good public cover but I´ll talk about this in another post) the rooms are for 2 persons but as my mother know some doctors of the hospital (she teaches in the University of Valencia in Law and some of them reciebed classes from my mother) they left me in a single room (also because they know as it´s my hospital about my disability and of course my incontinence). When you stay for nearly a month you finish being confident with all the personal and nurses but anyway when they came to change me 3 times a day and if you call them because you have soiled the diaper, and being stuck in bed you could do it yourself (in a difficult way) but you could, but I let them do it. Why? first because they are very comrehensive and delicate with incinontinence, they know it´s an intimate thing, second, at 8 o´clock in the morning they wake you up with holding the diaper to change you, third they are prepared and have experience to do it and somtimes (not all, but almost) they do it better even that yourself in that situation and fourth, I really was in pain with morphin and serious life risk in the first days....I don´t have more excuses but I don´t regret the way I acted, at the end, that´s their work and they did it with a lot of kindness. Anyway, I think some of you might think that if you can do it you should always but you must also empathise with the situation...and maybe you are right when it´s just wet but what to do when you pooped yourself? As I said you can´go with the lung boxes to the shower, and sometimes I can arrive to the toilet my fecal incon isn´t total but how the hell can you wash you ass in a bed, alone and with wires connected to your veins and lungs? You must recognise that it is difficult at least if not directly impossible. Some months later I went back 4 days with another health problem and then I did it myself, but in that circunstances I think I acted correctly. Hope you understand it. And if not, we are all different, but ok, the post talked of changes in hospital and that´s my experience. (not to mention 9 years ago when I had the spinal injury and I was in the wheelchair, there i also was changed by the nurses auntil I reovered some mobility after 3 or 4 weeks, but in that days believe me if I say I seriously thjought about suicide. I was terribly depressed and upset for what happened and what could be the consequences for life).

I hope my experience helped, all I can say is that I´ve been sincere. salutations to everyone!!
