Hospital diapers

Got admitted to the hospital yesterday morning and didn’t bring enough MegaMax to last me an extended stay. Low and behold who knows how long I’ll be here. They have me in pull ups and sitting on a chux pad. The pull ups are worthless. Why can’t hospitals invest in some decent diapers?!?!

Unfortunately, most hospitals have no financial motivation to provide better diapers. State laws and hospital policies usually dictate diaper changes at specified intervals, often every 3 - 4 hours. Thus, there is little motivation to provide premium diapers.

Additionally, hospitals are concerned about the possibility of lawsuits for bed sores. Then, they are reviewed and rated by state boards for factors including bed sores. So, no 6- or 8-hour changes for premium diapers, although they may work well for most of us.

Similarly there is a medical paranoia about plastic-backed diapers contributing to diaper rash. No allowance is made for informed diaper-wearers who maintain good hygiene and have no problems.

Agreed hospital diapers are good for only small leakage not for multiple large voids. After they removed my catheter ( hospital policy while in recovery ward ) I had my wife bring my quality stash from home. So much better, even the night nurse's and aids appreciated the value , less changes less work for them, on to the next patient.
Education and budget allowance adjustments are key, but it would be like moving a mountain. Just my thoughts.

I brought 5 MegaMax diapers but ended up staying 3 days. I wanted to save at least one for the trip home so I just gave in and wore the hospital pull ups. I gotta say I was impressed with the chux pads they used. The pull ups basically leaked straight through and the chux didn’t leak at all. I just wore a T-shirt and pull up and was able to change myself which was nice. I just told the nurses/techs when I needed more pull-ups and chux. I had 2 bowel movements when I was there and just crawled to the bathroom for those (I’m an amputee) Luckily the iv antibiotics I was on didn’t screw up my stomach and I was able to make it to the bathroom. All and all it wasn’t that bad and I will say I’m grateful that I had SOMETHING

Do you ever have occasional Bowel incontinence due to constipation or not feeling your colon is full until its really full and you just can't make it? That has happened to me. It sucks.

No I haven’t had that issue. My bowel Incontienence stems from my GI issues. It’s gotten better recently but I’ve had some close calls. I’ve cut down on my coffee *gasp* and have cut some things out of my diet. Some days my bowels can still go haywire but I’ve learned to manage it.
