I got my tank bag on e-Bay as well, such a better deal than buying direct from a retailer and about a quarter of the cost of getting one from one of the two local motorcycle dealers/shops where I live. Mine has one big expandable pocket with a smaller, flatter pocket over the top of that one covered in clear plastic so you can see your map easily. It also has two side compartments as well. These things are really incredible and I'm surprised how well the magnet system works. I ride a sport-touring bike so cargo space is always at a premium and I admit to enough vanity that I like that the tank bag doesn't destroy the look of my machine.

CJ, Nice looking unit! I'm heading to Ebay to check out the tank bags. I ride a Vstar 950 touring. Price new was so good I had to get one I take my dog with me sometimes when I ride so extra storage is always nice.

In past years, I did Harley riding and found this could be a challenge, since the motions of the bike forced leaks at the leg bands. I added extra padding, boosters, too...and long leg vinyl or rubber pants (bloomer style). This helped a lot for the leg band leaks while seated. As for the protection showing above the belt line, I wore leathers that fit high enough on my waist and a jacket that was longer length, since I'm tall. Also, a long sweater or sweatshirt under my jacket tended not to ride up. This was not a major issue to me, anyhow.

I suppose the greater issue when riding longer distances, is finding a more private place to change when needed. But, I always seemed to manage this, too. All in all, it worked out and I did a lot of road trips by bike, even when there were not as many good protection options as we have today with better disposables, etc.

I used to dream of motorcycling but my knees post Iraq just wont support the bike... so ride an extra mile or two for me!

Sorry to hear about your knees. A good buddy of mine bought one of those Can-Am 3 wheelers for his daughter who has ridden bikes her whole life until she became disabled following a work accident. At first she really resisted it because it just wasn't the same but now she loves it and rides with us all the time. I drove one and the feeling is somewhat different but if you concentrate on the experience of being out in the open and the exact same experience of using your hand on the throttle, it feels similar enough. Those things have been around long enough, you might be able to find a good used one for relatively cheap. I don't know, there's just something freeing about the feeling of being on a bike on a back road or little used highway somewhere. It really grounds me in the here-and-now, like nothing else matters at that moment (and it probably shouldn't or else it would be really dangerous!).
