Swimming

I think swimming would be extremely beneficial for me in my physical therapy. My old pt shot the idea down when she found out I have a paralyzed neurogenic bladder and occasional bowel incontinence. She was mostly concerned about the bladder issues since there really isn’t a diaper to contain it. I have a new physical therapist and I have emailed her and asked if she has any ideas. I have no idea if she knows of my issues but she does now. Has anyone successfully swam?

So-called “swim diapers” actually are “fecal containment systems.” They are designed and intended for use by those who are bowel incontinent. They hold only a small amount of urine.

Swim diapers are no designed or intended to conntain urine. If you are bowel incontinent, swim diapers will contain feces. Of course, if you realize that you are experiencing a fecal episode you must leave the water immediately.

There are disposable swim diapers such as Swimsters. SoSecure is a reussable swim diaper I use. It uses velcro tabs to attach securely. However, it requres some agility to put on.

Unfortunately "children" pee in pools. Urine is sterile.
Just thinking an experienced PT person should know this and not have too big a problem with you being in a pool?

I am UIC only (most of the time), and I swim regularly in pools & the ocean. I also dive when I can, using a wet suit. I cannot afford a dry suit at this time, so no diapers needed when diving.

Steve - yea I don’t know she seemed to be of the no peeing in the pool party. While I think if I limit what I drink it will be helpful but I don’t know how much it really matters for me. I bought some swimmates when I went to Martha’s Vineyard but never used them as we didn’t end up going swimming.

I have something similar and just to add buy two large beach towels sew them together with a hole for your head and the bottom open this allows you to change in privacy!

I don't bother with them just wet in the local river.
