Septic Systems

Sat Aug 11, 2007 5:59 am

After enjoying city sewerage for many years and never a concern about diaper laundry where I use bleach for sanitizing, I find myself with a septic system and concerns about bleach killing off the benefical bacteria necessary to keep a septic system working.

Do those of you with septic systems have any problems from using bleach in the laundry?

I've been washing cloth diapers for about 5 years now. I use a little bleach with every load. I've noticed no problems with my system. I believe for good general maintenance anyway, you should have it pumped every 3rd year.
I know Rid X will help if anyone still worries. ...........Paul

Diapers, Bleach and Septic Systems

Thanks, Paul,

I am much relieved! I've been enjoying my new home and using the septic system for 8 months now, washing diapers every other day and using a half cup of bleach per wash load.

The topic of bleach in laundry came up somehow (diapers not involved) and dire consequences were predicted since bleach would kill off the beneficial bacteria, so necessary to break down sludge and keep the septic system flowing.

Various additives have been suggested, including an enzyme action drain cleaner, yeast and Rid X. Someone suggested to me NOT to use yeast, the correct stuff was Rid X.

So, Rid X it is and I'll take your advice about pumping. I'll probably do it at the three year point as you suggest and we can probably tell how much the pumping was needed and set the next pumping accordingly, perhaps I can go 4 to 5 years.

Thanks again, Paul!
