Suprapubic I have got but am back in diapers at the moment.

Sun Apr 19, 2015 4:34 am

Am having some major issues with spasms at the moment. I went to the urologist last Monday 5 weeks after having the SP operation and told him about pains in my penis. He confirmed that the theatre notes said that they had put 10 ml in the balloon when I only used to have 5 ml in the old urethral one so he took 3 ml out. This seemed to help until yesterday when things got worse with spasm and intense pain in the penis followed by a burst of wee. I wet several times so I still have some packs of Attends M 9s left so am back using. It is strange wearing again and feels uncomfortable but I hope I don't have to wear for to long as to get used to them again.
Doctors appointment will be made in the morning.

I am very sorry you are having so many problems with your suprapubic catheter. I do not like hearing this as one day I probably end up with one.
As to date I have done quite well with a Foley I am going through test now to see if the Foley had done any damage to the bladder. These test are done rottenly to keep track of any problems that might accrue.

I hope you did not take your suprapubic catheter out if so it will have to be surgically put back in the holes heal over very fast.

Most Foley catheters say 5cc of sterile water but actually take 10cc.
Copy and paste this into your address bar then read how much to fill the Foley balloon.

more good info

This will explain a lot.
If the balloon is not inflated to its fullest it may not sit right in the bladder and that can cause problems in its self.

I been very lucky five years with a Foley and only had problems once and that was caused by an underinflated balloon.
The nurse put in a catheter with a 30cc balloon “I use a 5cc balloon” and only put 5cc water in it. I had pains so bad I went to the ER and they found it and filled the balloon up to a full 30cc the pain went away.

So I do believe the balloon can cause problems.
Size of the catheter can also cause problems although I been up to a 24f catheter.
I use an 18f now and have for four years and I having no problems.

I hope the doctors fine your problem fast being incontinent I not a whole lot of fun.

Thanks for that. Have just got back from the doctors and he has not been much help. I have not had the catheter changed yet they want it left for 10'weeks before changing for the first time. I am just coming up to 6 weeks since the operation so he says to try and hang out if I can before changing it. He did say I could get the catheter care team out and get them to totally empty the balloon then refil with exactly 5 ml of sterile water so we are sure what's in there. Will see how it goes this week and mabe do that.

Hi 4wheeldave

I guessing they want the catheter in until you completely heal.
Having the catheter care team come in and letting them check it to see if it is inflated correctly is not such a bad idea. If you read that link I posted they say it is important to fill the balloon correctly and do not underinflate them. I know from my own experience a balloon that is underinflated can cause pain and not sit right to seal and will leak and cause pain.

Thanks lyle. Things have calmed down a lot now so I am just leaving things alone. If it all kicks off again I will definitely get them out to change the water in the balloon. I am scheduled to have my first change on the 14 th of May so that's only about 3 weeks away now. I am apprehensive about this first change and will be glad when it's done so I will know what to expect every time.

Thanks again.
