Supra pubic catheter

Wed Feb 19, 2014 7:18 am

I was wondering if any members here have a supra pubic catheter inserted. It is something that I could consider and had been mentioned down the years by my urologist.
It's the thought of the bag that puts me off but I believe you can have a valve fitted that you just open to let you bladder drain when you want to.
My only problem is don't know when I need to go to the toilet because of nerve damage so if I did not empty often enough the urine would just come out the normal way and would still have to wear diapers. What does anyone think? Could it work for me.

Hello Dave,

Everyone has there own reasons for this treatment or that and you are in a totally different boat then I am but it was a thought that crossed my mind. The main reason I ruled it out for me was the idea of a hole in my abdomen with a rubber tube sticking out. The way I see it, if I change my mind(which I doubt) I can always look at it again. This is something we need to pick for ourselves. But if I did give my 2 cents, I would say if you can manage with out it now, I would not do it. Not till your back is up against the wall would I go that far. But like I said, that is my thoughts.

Thanks for that. That is the way I have been thinking. Am not to bothered about the tube but it's all the fuss with the bags that I worry about and would it work for me anyhow.
Next appointment with the urologist is the 12th of March so will run it by him and see what he thinks.
Thanks for your reply and take care.

Hi 2wheelsdave

I have a ureteral Foley catheter and have for over four years.
I was also told down the road I may need a Suprapubic catheter. Actually it is the same catheter it is where it enters into your bladder.
As for the bag I though like you it might be hard to get use to but surprisingly is wasn’t.
Also like you I cannot tell when I have to go nor can I go on my own I have CIDP a rare type of neuropathy that caused nerve damage.

My urologist does not want me to use a valve on the catheter blocking the flow of urine. He is afraid I won’t feel the need and not empty it thus backing urine up into my kidneys this can get to be very serious.

I have very little trouble with my Foley catheter very little discomfort from it and at least for me no leaks. It is much easier to care for than pads and it is easy to conceal it is also not bulky under clothing this is as close to being normal as one can get.

But I do have to say at first I had UTI’s for the first year but working with my urologist I been UTI’s free for three years.

One side note: no one one should never use an indwelling catheter unless there is a defiant need and all other options have been tried and you understand and willing to except all the risk involved.

Wish you all the best
Lyle
