It looks like that my probems may not only be urinary urge incon.. earlier i felt the urge to do no 2.. and despite my clenching.. i still felt it coming out... If i had'nt sat on the toilet then, i might have filled the diaper.. I do remember this occasionally happening before. when i first dealt with urinary incontinence back in the day (2008 to 2010). I will be sure to keep a close eye on it, and if i actually have a bowel accident, i will be sure to talk to my doctor. I really hope this doesn't become full fledged double incotnience.. PLEASE Lord.. urinary incontienence is enough to deal with. This may be a false alarm..after all, im frequently prone to constipation which in extreme cases is known to cause impaction which can affect elimination control. It may simply be a matter of excercising my sphincter muscles so they don't lose strength..

Peace out!

Rob

Rob,

I really feel your pain. I would not wish FI (fecal incontinence) on anyone. Hopefully it was just a bad day and will not recur.

Re the constipation, do recall that severe constipation can cause overflow diarrhea. It is counterintuitive. One must treat for the underlying cause of constipation, not the symptom of diarrhea. It usually is called either overflow constipation or overflow diarrhea. You can Google it for a better explanation. This is my problem - severe chronic constipation causing my fecal incontinence.

I found Miralex (Polyethelene Glycose) stool softener to significantly help, along with increased fiber (but not too much fiber) and exercise. It is available OTC. You should discuss it with your physician. Usually only one to two caps per day is sufficient. It requires some trial-and-error to fine-tune the dosage.

I forget how you diaper, but if the bowel incontinence recurs, be sure that your diapers have good, high, internal standing leak guards to keep the stool away from the leg gathers. Right now I am double incontinent (the UI comes and goes). My diaper selection is prioritized by finding good diapers with a plastic shell and internal leak guards. Then I move on to absorbency for the urinary incontinence. At least the FI will have little impact on the number of diapers per day that you use.

Thanks JD..

I didn't know that your bowel incon was due to constipation? I thought it was due to a rock climbing accident..did the rock climbing nerve damage cause the constipation which in turn caused the incontinece? Curious minds want to know I guess :). As far as the bowel incontiennence in my case.. I really hope it does not become permanent.. as this would probably cause me to want a colostomy.. In the case of last night.. I'm not sure if it was actually pushing out as in having a bowel movement as it was "prarie dogging" to use a crude reference from the movie "Rat Race". For sure, i will endeavor to increase my fluid and fiber intake... Oh gosh..bowel incon would be soo embarassing to deal with..that would really put a damper on working at the camp, not to mention subsitute teaching... I suppose if it becomes full on bowel, I can inform the camp administration and they would let me leave to take care of business and there would be enough counselors to cover..but how in the world would I change when needed while subbing a large classroom? And if i don't change right away, Lord knows i would leave an odor..

I probably have nothing to worry about...i hope...

Peace out!

Rob

Rob, I suffered severe pelvic trauma due to the climbing accident. It completely fractured my pelvis and required reconstruction. You should see my X-rays with all of the plates!

Despite the reconstruction I was left with permanent nerve damage. That was many years ago. Age has complicated things and made it worse.

Some of the tendency to chronic constipation is innate in my body chemistry and the physiology of my colon. Others might handle the ensuing bowel movements and often diarrhea somewhat better than I do, but I lost most of the nerves that normal people use to sense an impending bowel movement, plus some loss of sphincter control.

Rob,

My heart goes out to you. Loss of bowel control can be the pits. If this persists (and I hope it doesn't) you might consider using Nullo, an internal deoderant. I have had bowel accidents that nobody guessed I had because the Nullo suppressed the odor, giving me valuable time to find a handicapped restroom to wash and change.

I have difficulty with bowel control because I have gastroparesis (paralyzed stomach). The diet recommended for stomach paralysis is the diametric opposite of the diet recommended for bowel control, and the nerve dysfunction which causes stomach paralysis can affect the small and large bowels as well; the result is exasperating. I have profited from JD's advice and example. I clean myself out the day before I must function in public. My advice is to keep a well-stocked diaper bag handy every time you must function in public, to clean yourself out the day before, and to experiment with Nullo or another internal deodorant.

Good luck and keep us informed.
