Post subject: | Quit making cloth-like diapers |
Hey everyone, I put up a petition after being inspired by the "Small diaper" petition that another user has posted. Please read my petition and share it if you would like to help get more reliable diapers back onto the market that actually contain leaks. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/243/694/ ... pers/#sign I have tried many types of diapers and I have never understood who decided that fake cloth covers made out if course strands of paper and plastic was better for the patient than the dependable plastic backed diapers. Self image of the users are not the reason. Babies don't care what they look like to others and they don't care if they leak. Adults would care that they don't leak, but quite frankly the only people that will every see my diapers are my medical team and anyone I allow to get intimate with me. I'm not entering a fashion show for diapers so just give me something that works well and is better at containing leaks and odors. From my petition: Who decided that "cloth-like" should be the standard for people that have to deal with Incontinence? I can promise you it wasn't the patients! I have seen many reasons why the "cloth-like" trend in disposible diapers was started. Reasons have been everything from "More like real underwear." to "Less like a diaper." I would like to address the reasons I have heard. "More comfotable." - Pro: Not slippery. Con: Not as soft as cotton and it can cause severe chaffing on the inner thighs where contact is constantly moving when the user is mobile. "More like real underwear." - No Pro or Con. This is a flat out lie. Nothing that feels like having a thick pad pulled through your crotch feels like regular underwear. "Less like a diaper." - No Pro or Con. It feels like a diaper to the user no matter what the covering is made to feel like. "Better for the patients self-image" - Supports of the "cloth-like" movement would like you to believe that since the product looks slightly more like cotton underwear. They would also like you to accept that you will feel better about yourself because of it. As a user/patient I have had the chance to try many "cloth-like" and plastic backed adult diapers. Some products have better tapes like Secure Personal Care. Others have outstanding capacity like Dry Care, Secure Personal Care and Abena. With higher quality plastic backed diapers from Secure Personal Care, Dry Care and Abena I have had very few leaks of sagging issue when wet. I feel better knowing that is I need to change the plastic backing will contain most of the odors until I can get to a bathroom to clean up. My self image is a result of my self confidence. When I know my choice of protection is reliabe my self image is good. I can go on with my like and manage a pretty good attitude. Kudos to Abena, Secure Personal Care, Dry Care and a few others that still make a quality plastic backed disposible diaper. A special thanks to Abena finding a way to make the plastic backing more environmentally friendly. When using "cloth-like" products the follow issues hinder and lower my self esteem and confidence. "Cloth-like" diapers are designed to look and feel like cotton. News flash! They feel nothing like cotton. It feels more like paper and feels more like sandpaper. Repeated friction against my skin has rubbed my skin raw. "Cloth-like" breatheable backing wicks moisture like cloth causing leaks at the edge of the waterproof backing when the core in that area is near saturation, sometimes the first time is is wet. Every "Cloth-like" diaper I have used sags shortly after a snug fitting dry or wet, contributing to leaks around the legs. If it is "breatheable" so body heat and sweat can escape, so can odors! When I can't count on a diaper to contain fluids or odors I become very self conscious and concered that I may be offensive to anyone around me. It is much healthier for me and everyone around me if I don't have leaks. It is very hard to dissinfect a cloth sofa at a friends house or a cloth chair at a restraunt. Infact any fecal matter leakage is a bio-hazzard! Most of the time to address the shortcomings of the "cloth-like" diapers I had to wear vinyl or PUL cover pants to contain the edge leaks and odors to preserve my dignity so the benefits are all null and void. Everything I have been told of why "cloth-like" is better has had exaclty the opposite effect. I'm sure some will say 'There are plenty of choices out there", and I will agree. However, Kendall Wings have a very low capacity, Depends Maximum Briefs don't wick fast enough and leak, and the rest are pretty worthless when it comes to actually containing fluids or fecal matter. I have been let down by too many to list. Even Attends has reduced their quality to the point of losing private customers. Please sign this petition to give patient back their dignity and confidence. Stop trying to decide what you think is better for us, and give us something that we can actually trust to preserve our diginity and self image. We need the vendors to listen to the users, not the marketing flunkies or politically sensitive healthcare providers that have never had to use those products themselves. |

Wow! SeattleDoug! That's a great dissertation on that scourge laid on us by marketing types who feel we all "must have" cloth-like backing on diapers! You've done a great job addressing everything cloth-like is purported to be...and, as you point out, isn't! |
