I love the way you put it, Sandy, the Jed look!

True enough about bib overalls but they sure do make a heavy cloth diaper disappear!

And your story about the effectiveness of cloth for the long haul and unexpected delays is a great testimonial for cloth. I understand the reluctance to switch to cloth with the laundry hassle and the big up front cost of acqusition

But even the best disposable won't go the extra mile for you when things don't go as planned. When a disposable is done, it is done and you are in for a leak.

I always found cloth could "hang in there" for some extraordinary "saves" and that doesn't get mentioned a whole lot but is an other advantage to wearing cloth and putting up with the bulk and all.

Hi Joe
With overalls you can hide allot for a little added hiding you can add a flannel on the cooler days that hangs 1/2 way down your butt. Even know I've been wearing cloth for a while now it never seizes to amaze me how well the wicking works and how much they can hold without leaking :D I have started using more of the Tranquility full contour boosters in my cloth diapers. They really help with the wetness. You honestly feel much drier with one of those in your diaper than without.

My young friend has more or less switched to cloth at night. And is using cloth more often then not during the day when she is at home. She still uses mostly disposables when away from home. She says shes not brave enough to go out in public with the bulk of cloth even with overalls. But I'll bet in time she'll give in and do it. Just look how far this young person has come in such a short time :) I'm so proud of her :D .............Sandy :)

Hi Sandy,
I appreciate the support for cloth diapers that you have provided as someone new to cloth diapers. I've been at it for many years, trying to convince folks that cloth is amazing and yet, I often feel like the voice crying in the wilderness!

But I really want to comment on what you've done for Jane and your young friend....truly wonderful!

And the ongoing interest in what effect you are having on these lives is shown by the numbers reading this thread...now over 9000!

Way to go, Sandy! and you're my kind of people, wearing bib overalls!

Well my Young Friend is still at it. She modeled another one for me yesterday :) She has now made another design for the bottom this one has sides that are about 4 inches wide a wider crotch area. She again cut up a pair of plastic pants for the water proofing. And put the plastic under a thin cloth outside layer and used Flannel for the top sheet on the inside it has two layers of something else through the crotch area and part way up the front and back then it goes to one layer front and back the rest of the way (if that makes sense :?: ) She kept the sides just the flannel lining on the inside to avoid bulk on the sides. BTW the two layer are under the top sheet. So I guess you could call it a three layer diaper through the crotch area and two layer beyond that.

Anyway she did a real good job the outside of it appears rather smooth front and back with no real bulges or outlines. You can of course tell that it's a thicker through the crotch area. But if you didn't know what you were looking at from a distance you more then likely wouldn't know the difference. Now once its wet it may or more then likely bulk out and show more? but as of yet she hasn't used it for it's intended purpose. It's been rather cool up here so she is waiting for a warm day to catch some rays and give it a try :) ...............Sandy :)

Sandy,
Sounds like she's about to perfect it! Too bad we couldn't see a picture of the suit itself.(Not with her wearing it). Maybe you should get her to make one for you! A one piece maybe. Anyways, sounds like she doing great! ........Paul Martin

My Husband said I should have her make me one to. But I'm a little shy when it comes to a swimsuit call me conservative but I wouldn't be caught dead in a two piece where the public can view me  even at a distance Even the one piece I have I wear shorts over the bottom even when I'm swimming. It's not that I'm fat :!: OK well I could stand to lose about 15 pounds  But with my one piece I will wear a light button up shirt or a T-shirt over the top when I'm not swimming.

Call me strange but I don't believe it's proper for a female to attract attention to her body from anyone but her husband. It's rare that we ever swim at a public beach We do sometimes go to pools Which is always a struggle for me.

The way I enjoy swimming is being anchored out on our Power cruiser in a remote area were nobody is around. I've even been known to lay out in the sun on the boat (how daring LOL) Besides with a two piece in a private setting it still may not work with my husband. He can't leave me alone when I'm wearing my Rumba pants :P What would he do if I had a two piece swim suit on  :P ............................Sandy :)

Thought you guys might like to know Jane was asking about cloth :) Her and I went out together the other day shopping and getting some stuff for my Husband.

I had my Cloth on and had my Farmer Jed's on again :D We were gone most of the afternoon. Jane had to change twice I made it all afternoon. But to be honest I could have used a change late in the afternoon :? But I went for it :!: had a small leak but with those Dark Blue almost black coveralls I don't think it was very noticeable

Anyways Good News! Jane was asking about the cloth just general questions but she was asking :D I told her why don't you try it at home during the day or maybe at night. Or be daring and go out in public with me next week  I told her dress like I do. I said to her can you tell I'm wearing a diaper much less a cloth one. She said well not really but I know you have it she said. I told her loosen up! If you want to try it I give you one of mine to try. She seemed real nervous about the public idea. So I said try it at home see what you think. I said if you want to try it out in public just dress like me You know I'll be honest with you if I think your showing at all  I told her your going to like them if you try them  She didn't say she would try them yet but she is thinking about it.

I go out and about and do a bunch of aaron's at least once a week for my husband, the shop and myself. it takes most of the afternoon or day at least once a week. With fuel as high as it is I try to cut down on how many trips to town I do. .....................Sandy :)

Sandy,
I am glad to hear that Jane is thinking of trying cloth diapers. Once she tries them one or two times, she'll see what they are like.
I wonder, though, do you think Janes's up front reluctance is the fact she may receceive some redicule from her husband thet she's wearing a cloth diaper with plastic panties? From past comments you have made on how her husband hounds her for having to wear a diaper, I wouldn't put it past him he would give her a lot of thoughtless remarks.
I hope not. Jane has gone through a lot. Your support is a great help to her Sandy. Keep it up and keep us up to date how things turn out! .......Paul Martin

It’s been a while since I looked at this thread and was just reading the posts over the last couple of months. A couple of suggestions for Sandy’s friend Jane and making a bikini style diaper. First of all, vinyl can be purchased in a variety of colors and styles from Hancock Fabrics at www.hancockfabrics.com. But why bother with plastic at all if it is only going to be worn to lay out in the back yard. Make a top from the same fabric used for the outer layer of the bottom and the combination will look like a two piece swimsuit from a distance. It will get wet, but moisture will be able to evaporate making it cooler than wearing plastic; and if it is absorbent enough, it can last indefinitely without leaking.

I am old enough to remember when disposable diapers didn’t exist, and toddlers playing outdoors in the neighborhood wore only a cloth diaper and tee shirt in the summer, with no plastic or rubber pants. (I was one of them according to pictures in my old family album.) One diaper could last all day, it was always damp but never soaked; evaporation could keep up with a child’s wetting. Jane might be able to accomplish the same thing and be much more comfortable while laying out in the yard.

Just something to consider; it might be worth a try.

Tom

Hi Tom
I was meaning to get back to you on this. I copied this message and gave it to my young friend. BTW it's my young friend not Jane that is doing this. She was going to follow up on your suggestion about the Fabric store.

She Does make the top out of the same outside material as the bottoms she also uses a layer of something inside the cup which helps hid her how can I say this pointed parts from sticking out  (can I say that  :?)

Anyway The thought of going without any sort of water proofing is an interesting idea. We were talking about that and at first she said are you kidding :?: but then once we talked about it and thought about it maybe you have something :?: When you think about it it kind of goes against the normal thought. We are always trying to keep from leaking and staying dry on the outside. She said well with that line of thought I could just wear my old Bikini bottoms and just not worry about it  But like she says in seems irresponsible not to be wearing protection with our condition even in your own back yard :?: Also often times she lays or sits on a padded lawn chair. also spends time on the deck dressed this way. If she was to use just the cheap plastic chair so when she did leak it could fall right through and onto the grass might be something?

Well anyway before I dig to much of a hole here I'll stop. She did say to tell Tom Thanks for your information and thoughts :)

..............Sandy :)
