Mentally and physically?

Hey all,
Something that has happened a few times is that I have sometimes forgotten, or in the future not be able to(i am in some retentioon afterr all) empty my bladder before I cath, and when I have the catheter in place and am cathing, sometimes I have a spasm and urine lfocesi tsway out through te urethra around the catheter, making a big mess, since the urine goes everywhere. Anyone else have this problem.? Any ideas on how to combat it, other than the obvious pre cath emptying( which again, may not always be possible)?
Peace out!
Rob

Bladder spasms can be the pits. They can be excruciatingly painful, and, as you are discovering, they can frustrate even a well-fitted Foley. Try using a straight, intermittent catheter first, if the spasms leak past the Foley; after your bladder is dry, insert the Foley. Good luck and report back with news of your experience. There are enough catheter users here that somebody must have the answer your need. If not, call your urologist.

Yeah I've had that happen before. I always cath in front of the toilet. This way when it happens (and when I do get the cath in I always get a spurt of pee draining right away anyways), all that pee will still end up in the toilet instead of on me or the floor. Actually, at first I would do it in the shower until I got the new aiming & expecting it figured out better.
Also, even when using a urine collection bag, I've also learned to just keep wearing a diaper (or pullup) anyways. This will catch any around-the-catheter peeing, as well as any other bloody issues I may be dealing with at that time. Well, that and I don't have any other underwear any more so it's more comfortable with one one anyways.

Rob,
The Urologist wanted me to wear diapers or pull ups till they had me fitted right. I would have leaks from time to time. Now that I have the right fit, I have had very few issues. I have changed catheters to the 18fr Duette catheter and no issues at all. Im back in underwear and so far no troubles at all. But like Brain say at first, you need a place to insert your catheter to catch the mess if you make one. You maybe forcing it in to hard or not enough lube. Like with diapers there is a learning curve with using them. Good luck and be patient with them it takes time to get use to using them.

Might be worth keeping some records of input/output, how much you're retaining etc. You might find a pattern E.g that if you try and Cath a higher amount it might make a spasm more likely. Does sound like a good idea to try and remember to void before cathing. Also wonder if trying a urinal bottle might help a bit though it depends if the spasm happens before you can get yourself adjusted properly in the bottle or not.
