SG, I hear you on the added cost. The only thing that can be done is minimize it wherever possible. It's one of my least favorite aspects of this, too. It's looking like I will need to dilate (stretch) a urethral stricture with an intermittent self catheter several times daily; I never realized silicone tubes could be so darn expensive. Catheters, along with diapers, are excluded from my insurance >.>
Have you tried the new Northshore house brand? I've been impressed with both the plastic and cloth back versions. Each one has their strong points and drawbacks.
The cloth back has adhesive/velcro tapes that work very well for multiple refastenings but it feels cold/damp sooner when wet compared to the plastic, so I end up changing more frequently just for comfort. Cloth back is of course quieter and it thankfully doesn't have the smell issues that some cloth back diapers have (Abena Air Plus). It is only $1.33 per diaper for size medium.
With the plastic back, I am able to get 100% padding utilization, even all the way to the back waistband, *while sitting*. With most brands, I get leaks at the back of the leg bands well before the back padding is used, so this is great (desk job, I sit too much). They stay feeling relatively dry on the skin, too. These have tapes with the blue landing zone for refastenings, which aren't my favorite design, but I haven't had any real issues with the tapes so far. Just have to position the tapes correctly the first time. Thankfully I'm experienced? :/ Ha.
The plastic back are only $1.29 per (medium), making them a great deal for how long they last without leaking. I'm making these my new daytime go to when I run out of the more expensive Tena Slip Maxi.
Edit: those prices are a bit low because they don't include shipping. I'm so used to vendors that include shipping in the case price that I didn't realize NorthShore charges shipping separately.
