How to manage the smell

Sun Dec 01, 2013 10:15 pm

I just recently made the switch to cloth for night and things were working out fine. Then about three nights ago I began to wake up with a diaper with a VERY strong ammonia smell. I wash them after every use and never just let it sit. The only thing I have changed is trying a high protein low carb diet. I read a lot of protein can cause it but .......DAMN, that stuff stinks. Other than a lot of water, any other suggestion to deal with that?

I think everyone crosses that problem sooner or later. More fluids to dilute will help, but not leave you any frier, and I wash them with Borax laundry soap, seems to help, but it certainly is an issue with cloth, I use both on and off now, not just cloth at night due to the odor issue. Hope it does not turn you off completely, but can't blame you if it did! Puffy

The other thing that I forgot to mention is to try double rinsing the wash load, seems the build up of excess soap will greatly enhance the urine odor as well, Puffy

Just an update, I did A LOT of research on cloth diapers and the many ways to care for them. What I learned is I have been washing them wrong and the ammonia was not washing out all the way. I rinsed them all and then soaked in vinegar for an hour and then washed without soap and then did an extra rinse. Worked like a charm. Only extra thing to have a lot of water to dilute the pee down.

Good to hear Rope, there are a few good sites out there that give good info on the care of cloth, mostly infant diapers, but same thing! Puffy

It is one of the reasons I haven't switched to terry nappies at night. I wore them when I was a kid and during my teens. My mother must of been sick and tierd of constantly washing wet nappies.
